I, of course, would defend the right of a Christian child to wear a cross to school, no matter what. What are your thoughts/opinions on the matter?

annie801, why shouldn't the student be discussing religion at school? Separation of Church and State means that the school should not be imposing religion on the students, but Freedom of Religion means that the student should be allowed to express any opinion or belief that they wish.

I would not be defending the Pentagram...only the right of the child to wear it. But if we took the child's right away to this then we would not have the freedom of religion we have. I would not want the right of my child to pray taken away!

Yes, they should be allowed just as much as crosses, and stars of David, and whatever else. I'd be interested in seeing the whole story. I've seen school districts do some absurd bannings before, but it's usually just because they can't think of any other solution for a big uproar or controversy - it's like their last minute resort thing they pull out just to make it all go away.

A Wiccan mother I know lets her 5 year old wear his to kindergarten. I would defend any child's right to wear any religious symbol to school. But I also think that, albeit unfortunately, the child will be teased mercilessly for wearing the "symbol of Satan" and will be labeled a "demon child." Ignorance abounds, especially in schools...

We automatically think negative symbols... symbols that christians have slandered through out the years.... but consider this pagan symbol... the peace sign as a symbol uniting everyone... pagan, agnostic , hippie in origin... the one thing the churches have not been able to successfully defile...

I am a Christian and I would say that any child should be able to wear anything regarding their faith as long as it doesn't interfere with school as I don't see how wearing that would.

Yes.

I would also defend the right of a high school student who wants to read the LaVeyan Satanic bible while at school, as long as it wasn't disrupting the class.

definitely. either way, the student shouldn't be discussing religion while at school, but having a small reminder of their religion with them shouldn't hurt anyone.

First, I wonder why you would put the child into a christian school...better atmosphere, maybe ( i hated it). But no, I don't care what beliefs anyone has. As long as it doesn't harm anyone, who cares?

No, I would not! I also would not defend the cross. I am a Christian and I don't believe in idol worshiping.....I feel that wearing a cross is just slightly toward idol worshiping.

By the way.....good question!

I'm not Christian, but isn't that the Christian-ly thing to do? So I'd think they'd all HAVE to all say yes.
