If there was yarn in her poop, it sounds like she chewed at least some of it first. This is a good sign. And yes I have had cats do this over the years, and luckily none were injured by it. I have also heard of cats killed because it got tangled in their intestine. Try to determine how long the piece of yarn was before she are it. It will give you some idea of how serious the problem is. Using hairball remedy is a good idea. Gently feel her tummy regularly over the next couple of days. If you feel a knot, get her to the vet RIGHT AWAY! When you figure out how much she ate, I'd call the vet and see what else they suggest.

It's very dangerous. The string catches and pulls the intestines, in very bad cases it causes them to bunch up like cauliflower and the cat goes into shock. I've heard from four different vet assistants who said they were there when the vet tried, but all the cats died on the operating table.
Thread is more dangerous than string. String is more dangerous than yarn. Yarn can still kill, but it depends on how long the piece was that the cat ate.

No, it is not okay for your cat to eat string. The string can tangle and cause intestinal problems. If it is just a short piece of string, a problem isn't very likely. However, if it was a long piece of string, you'll want to watch your cat closely and examine its stools. Give the cat hair ball medicine to lubricate the string's passage through the digestive tract. If you don't see the string pass through the cat's system in a couple of days, please contact your vet. Or, if your cat begins to show any signs of illness--lassitude, fever, vomiting, lack of appetite, constipation, etc., get the cat to the vet as soon as possible.

I would definitely take your cat to the vet. String foreign bodies are serious and can kill cats. It is best to get professional help sooner than later due to the possibility of intestinal damage. The string can get caught and the peristaltic movement of the digestive tract makes it saw a hole in the intestines leading to infection in the abdomen (bacteria from the intestines enter the cavity).

My cat would eat string like it was spaghetti. (I think he's retarded) He seems ok now, but I don't know if he actually swallowed it. (I pulled a piece out of his mouth/throat) String can get tangled up in intestines. If your cat stops pooping or continues to cough with nothing coming out, you shoud take her to a vet.

This is not good, it can kill your cat, go to the store and get some cat toys or an empty t.p.roll, tennis balls, take a sock and tie it into a large knot and give this to the kitty.
