Have you heard this story?
MIAMI -- When one of his parishioners fell ill, the former pastor of St. Kevin's Catholic Church in Miami didn't hesitate to lend a hand; he gave his kidney. In the past 16 years, Margarita Chavez has had three kidney transplants. Her latest was on Wednesday. The donor was the Rev. Alfred Cioffi. "I figured, I have two kidneys. I don't need two kidneys, so I could give her one," said Cioffi. "There are no words to understand what's going on here. I'm full of gratitude to him," said Chavez. Chavez and Cioffi met while he was a priest at St. Kevin's in Miami 15 years ago.

I wonder: All you people who say bad things about Catholic priests: When was the last time you donated a kidney to someone in need?

He did a wonderful, kind thing for another human being. Other people have done the same for strangers - people who were not Catholic, not priests; I'm sure they had spiritual beliefs but no formal religion. They also did kind and wonderful things for others.
The fact that some agnostic people showed compassion to others does not make all agnostics great people just as the noble and compassionate gift this priest made does not make all priests great people. (Nor does the fact some priests are pedophiles make all priests evil.) We are all responsible for our own individual behavior.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

I'm atheist, but even I know that not all religious people are bad. I try not to generalize based on the acts of certain people in a group. Sounds to me like that priest is a good person, there is nothing wrong with me,an atheist, saying that.

Would you expect anything less? That's what Christians do.
And Cameron C.......as for why donate his kidney if the other's failed. Do you think he would just stand by and watch her die? Just because the others failed doesn't mean this one will. And...if it does, perhaps another great Christian will step up to the plate.

I hope one can see the difference between questioning Catholic tradition, which is what I do, and saying Catholics are bad. I think many Catholics are Christians. I just don't agree with all your traditions.

That's funny, I don't understand why this isn't all over the media?? They usually jump at telling stories like this about Catholics.
This poses an interesting question for CJ. Can the person be saved, but not their kidney?

What I don't get is that, if she's had 3 previous kidney transplants, why would this one be any better?
