Alaskan Malamutes are NOT known for being good guard dogs, in fact the opposite. They are friendly dogs who aren't inclined to be vicious.
If you are considering getting one, keep in mind they are very large and need a lot of exercise. If not trained properly, you will have a most frustrating time as they are strong enough to pull a grown man off his feet! You will need a very large fenced yard! They also require grooming as their winter coats are double and very thick. They shed like crazy when summer comes. If their coat isn't taken care of, they can get horrible tangles and mats.

A guard dog is the result of a very specific kind of training, and that's not where you want to go.
If you're looking for a protective breed, that's another issue. Many differnt breeds can be protective, but I don't think Malamutes are particularly that type. They were developed as draft animals, not as protectors of person and property.

Perhaps German Shepards would be a fantastic guard dog. As a future veterinarian I say probably so. And yes there are such things as a ''guard dog''. Alaskan Malamutes might be good guard dogs but I'm not sure. Try a german shepard,Retreiver, maybe Bloodhound,Italian Greyhounds{smaller dogs] They all might be a good dog

Alaskan Malamutes are not known for being territorial or protective against humans. However they are big and scary looking, which is my idea of a perfect guard dog. (Frightening without being dangerous.) Labs, on the other hand, tend to be fairly protective without being vicious.

Malamutes make lousy guard dogs.
They can be decent alarm dogs because of their size and big bark.

They can be intimidating just because of their size and wolfish appearance, but they're not really much into the whole "this is my house and you can't come in". More like "Yeah....come on in....the game's on....gotta beer???" Like someone else mentioned too, they do take grooming, and if you have them in the house, they will shed enough that you could knit a sweater. Lots and lots of coat.... My thing is....ADT is not all that expensive.......

Not unless thoroughly trained. Malamutes and Huskies are known for being very ineffective watch dogs when they are just companion pets. The don't bark much and will welcome "visitors".
