I've been looking online at Newfoundland puppies (I'm interested in getting one but not in the immediate future) and was wondering if it's possible to breed them with dry mouth (no drooling). A couple breeders I've looked at advertise them but I'm wondering if it's just a scam to get extra money for the puppies.

I'm not planning to buy a puppy online, by the way, and I understand that Newfoundlands drool. But regardless of how I get a puppy there's bound to be scams and I'm wondering if this is one of them.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no such thing!!!! Some are naturally less drooly than others, but it is not something you can breed for.

And buying a giant breed pups (or any pups) from any online breeder is NOT a good idea.

Health clearances are WAY more important than dry mouths!!

Females as a rule, drool less than the males. By design, they have less massive muzzles and the "flews" are smaller, so less drool. There is no way eliminate drool totally though.

DROOLZ COOL!!!!!

Common Newf scams:

Dry mouth
No cardiac problems in the line
Parents/grandparents that weight over 250 pounds
All dogs realated to the puppies have good hips
They make good guard dogs
They are so placid that you don't need to train them
They come in "rare" cream color
A Landseer that is grey or brown and white is worth extra $$
Black and tan Newfs are worth more

Those are the most common scams that crappy breeders use to sell puppies.

No, there is no such thing as a dry-mouth Newfoundland. The same rumor exists about other "drooly" breeds (i.e.- St Bernards, Great Danes), but is simply not true.

Don't let drool deter you, though! I have a big, drooly Great Dane and she is wonderful, well worth it. Just keep a few "drool rags" lying around the house. Drool is just drool, and it wipes off walls, furniture, etc. easily with a damp cloth.

Some dog's can be drymouthed, yes, but you usually can't buy a puppy with a 'for sure'.

It would take years of extremely selective breeding to breed them securly drymouthed.

If you want a for sure drymouthed big dog, get a Leonberger -they're a bit more rare, and probably a bit more expensive (depending on who you go too), but they are excellent dogs, and when the breed was first being developed it was originally just a cross of Great Pyranese, Newfies, and St. Bernards.

Whatever breed you might choose to get, make sure you do your homework thuroughly, and only buy from a reputable breeder.

They can be bred to have tighter flews but I'm not sure if any breeder has ever been able to totally eliminate the drooling. I would be wary of any breeder that puts undue emphasis on any one part of their animals. You should be looking for a breeder that has the "total package" so to speak.

Try starting your breeder search here.
