Only if you never, ever use it. Your dog will learn to respond to nicknames as well -just make sure to use his real name when you are telling him to do something, or talking directly at him.
example:
okay -"Pookey! Hiya cutie puppy, you are just sooo sweet!"
not okay - "Pookey, sit!"
correct- " *dog looks at you*'
correct- ", lay down"
Get the idea? Nicknames are fine, just use the correct name when you really need your dog's attention.

I don't think you are a bad person and depending on the dog's age I do think it would be possible for the dog to forget his name after 7 months. As for the shelter, I'm sure they have people coming in saying that an animal is theirs just so they don't have to pay the adoption fees so that's probably why they are doing what they are. Besides, if it wouldn't bother you guys to adopt him, at least the money would go to help the other animals at the shelter.

Unlike people, dogs, cats and other people, use sounds, not "words" to associate their "names".
As an example, one of my five wonderful dogs (over a 45 year period) was named "Lady". We rescued her from a shelter, where her previous owners abused her, terribly. Her original name happened to match that of a relative, so we changed it to "Lady". One day, while the humans were sitting at the dinner table, with the dog lying peacefully on the floor, hoping for a stray morsel, during casual conversation, I happened to say the phrase, "Everything was going fine (at work), but lately . . . " Suddenly, Lady perked up and looked at us! We realized that she had responded to the similar (to her) sounding word, "lately"!
Assuming you call them by "name" throughout their puppyhood (or, even with an adult), after a very short time, they will not forget their names, even if you never use it, again! In other words, they will "imprint" on the name (BTW, I'm not aware of anyone who has not called their dog by name in such a long period of time!).
The only way they will "forget" their name is if their hearing goes (very common in older dogs), or if they have the canine equivalent of Alzheimer's (sad, but true!).
The important thing is that *you'll* know what your dog's name is! :)

dogs do not understand words as we do they work on sound association (tones ) you have called him/her many times im sure by now by it right name and it will have locked away that tone in its mind it doesn't matter what you call it now it will still remember it name but yes dogs can forget just as a person can if you do not from time to time use its real name it will not have forgotten it's name but more so just have no need to associate it with any thing any longer ie it will respond to lovums cutie ect as its food /walks and cuddles tones

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/sG93v
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

No. Dogs' brains are divided into equal parts and they will not forget their names.
Call your dog's name and see if he responds.

No loser, they don't forget their name. As long as you continue to use the name now and then, they'll remember.
How come you use the username loser? You should have more confidence and be more positive.

No they don't. My dog knows his real name, Maverick, and his other name, we like to call him 'puppy' - he responds to both.
