It probably means to stay humble. The king is the most valuable chess player, and the pawn the lowliest.

I'm afraid the metaphor doesn't work well, because in the game of chess, the king can move freely in any direction, but the pawn can only move forward. But poetic comparisons only go so far.

it means that you have everything you need financially, but you don't have a lot of ambition to make something out of the resources you have.
