I don't live dirrectly in the area the fire was in but near it. You can smell some smoke but less then yesterday. Is it safe to let my dog out for no more then an hour? She is a small dog who has no serious medical issues.

She is a cavalier king charles spaniel, 20 pounds.
Thank you everyone who answered this question... I'll give her more bones to chew on!

If you live in an area that has onshore winds then go for it, nothing too strenous though. I live in Del Mar but i just take my dog out for about 20 minutes each time, she sneezes a few times when we walk out the door but i go to the grassy areas that have sprinklers. The ash does not sit on wet grass so its less harmful for her. Its just better to stay inside and go out for taking care of business.

Well, think about it.

Dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell, as you most likely know. They are descendants of the wolf. In being that, you may not smell the smoke as much as your dog does. Smaller dogs don't have such a great sense of smell as the larger dogs, closer descendants of wolves, do. That would be something to think about.

What breed is she? Think about it. Is she large, medium, or small? I know you said small, but about how small?

To be on the safe side, I wouldn't really take my dog out. Why not wait a few days untill you can be sure the smoke is completely gone?

no you shouldnt. dogs may be really sensitive around smoke. the smoke is a high pressure point for dogs because the smoke isnt really good. The dog may get some sickness but it depends how it is. But for any bad or good reasons, DO NOT LET THE DOG OUT ! my work is done here. goodluck.

I live in Orange County and I am getting the smoke from everywhere. What I've been doing with my Boston Terrier is letting him out to go potty, then bringing him back in the house. I've been playing with him much more in the house to burn off his extra energy.

If you would not exercise in this weather, don't let your dog do it either.

I wouldn't expose my dog nor myself to any more smoke or fumes than is absolutely necessary.
So sorry about all the fires there. It must be terrible for everyone; people and pets.

Doncha think the ash would be bad for the dog to breathe in? I wouldn't be taking my dog there.

i wouldnt do it...just not worth the risk..keep in mined wood wasnt the only thing that burned ( oil gas plastic ) and there may still be toxic 'clouds' around.

It doesn't sound like a good idea because the fumes could hurt him.
