Perhaps this is a strange question, but I was just curious. I'm American, and I've heard that even though there's the traditional British fare like bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, steak and kidney pie, and the like, Indian food is also really popular in the UK. Also, I've noticed that whenever I come across cookbooks that are written by British authors, the recipes normally have Asian, French, American, or Spanish influences.

Curries are very popular here, but some of the curry types have never been heard of in Asia.
Italian pasta meals are common, especially when eating out, or buying a ready supermarket meal.
With cod diminishing at such a fast rate, that old British standby, fish and chips, is being priced out of the market.
Sunday lunch is still a traditional roast, beef, pork, lamb, or chicken, for many people, but mainly for us oldies, the young don't bother. Accompanied, of course, by Yorkshire puddings with beef, apple sauce with pork, mint sauce with lamb, and stuffing with chicken, with gravy, the ever-popular roast potatoes, and other vegetables. No separate salad course for us. It has to be cooked vegetables.
If ever you visit the UK, you should try eating at some of the popular pubs to see British food at its best. In some places, like central London and other city centres, it is difficult to find British food, we are now such a multicultural society.

There's a lot of foreign influence in today's British food for lots of reasons. We like Indian food because of the Raj but we also take in foreign cuisine because of the decline of British food during rationing ( after WW2 ).

Actual British food is very varied and we produce some of the best meat, fruit and veg in Europe. But we are influenced by the huge number of migrants to our country which is all to the good.

There's a lot more to national British food than fish, chips, bangers, mash and fry ups.

Curry is now a traditional English dish believe it or not. I don't like it personally, I love to cook and I usually make shepherd's pie, steak and chips, roast chicken and spaghetti bolognese quite regularly.
If we go out to eat we like to eat Chinese or Thai but not Indian. Although it is really popular in England it is still an acquired taste.

Okay so does that mean as your American you only like Burgers and Chips!?

Of corse we like other stuff. There is probably atleast three indian takeways in every town, one italian and all sorts of other exotic foods. Most people eat food that isn't 'typically English' all though we are still a big fan of the good ol' Full English Breakfast, Sunday Roast and Fish & Chips!

The thing is this. If I go out to eat the chances are that I will opt for chinese, french or italian because I don't cook that at home. But my favourite meals to have at home are good old english meals like the roast dinner, shepherds pie etc.

As you have said, the masses enjoy food from the sub-continent (Asia) and on a lower level American fast foods. The Classy love French food and maybe some Italian.
I must admit, I enjoy them all (and I'm not a glutten) especialy a good Spanish feast, with plenty of good Rioja.

Bangers and mash, yes....Shepherds pie, yes.....Steak and kidney pie, yes....
...but i also love a good corned beef hash. A curry, love a good roast lamb dinner. And a good cheeseburger, not the crap you buy at a fast food outlet,..but a good M&S burger, liberally covered in cheese, with a fresh cob...!!
