John faced martyrdom when he was boiled in a huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The Apostle John was later freed and returned to what is now modern-day Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.

All but John.

I have heard the boiled in oil thing, but do not know where that can be found in the Bible. Can someone help me out here? Is this just a tradition that has been passed around or is there some documentary proof for the claim? I have heard various versions. One says that John was un-scathed by the boiling oil and another says he was so horribly disfigured that he was banished from sight. Just asking a question.

John is the only one of the company generally thought to have died a natural death from old age. He was the leader of the church in the Ephesus area and is said to have taken care of Mary the mother of Jesus in his home. During Domitian's persecution in the middle 90's, he was exiled to the island of Patmos. An early Latin tradition has him escaping unhurt after being cast into boiling oil at Rome, so he came close!

Symbolically speaking it was John as he authored works in Revelation.

The 12 diciples Symbolicaly represented mans 12 characteristics. As the 12 were representations of reality within mankind, and not literal in the physical sense, yet still as Valid as any personality, none were "put to death" as this too is symbolism.

The entire works of truth are in plains sight for those whom read in symbolic form and look to other areas outside of any bible.

Linnie, technically boiling in oil is fry. I would be interested to know if it was a deep or shallow fry.
