My sister's labrador retriever likes to lift his paw, which is rather cute, but does he get pleasure doing it? I can understand why dogs enjoy being scratched but I dont get the paw thing.

It's a gesture they use, to get your attention, to say "I'm here, look at me.." They like to reach out and touch you. When I'm upset in some way my Husky comes over and sits down in front of me with his look of concern and puts his paw on me to say "there, there.....it's OK". It's part of their body language. Sometimes it can mean "Oh...you guys" when you are talking about them. It's a contact hello gesture.

I have 3 dogs at home but only one of them does this. (Not sure what kind of dog he is... he's a big black mutt.) He seems to do it in order to get attention. Since he already does it automatically, I taught him to shake when I say "paw" and he also knows "high five!"

i dont either. my bro has border collie mix that always puts his paw on your hand if you put your hand out. Dont know who taught him that trick. I would imagine they see at as a game or something.

Cause it gets them attention, praise or a treat.
