If as a present I got you a facial at a health spa, would you think I was implying that you looked old or would you think it was a nice present?

Sorry I miss typed that, I brought the present as a present, but they thought I was insinuating that she looked old. It was meant to be a thank you for being a wonderful sister-in-law. She has always been there for me even though my brother is no longer with us.

p.s. she is only 25 and isn't old in anyway

OMG no I wouldn't be offended! I'd be thrilled! A facial is not a treatment for looking old. It's a wonderful, relaxing treat! Just like a massage, but for your face, head and shoulders. Apparently the recipient has never had one and doesn't understand what it is.

It's a doctrine of good etiquette that perfume, soaps, toiletries of any kind are not considered tasteful gifts, for exactly the reason you suggest--they imply the receiver is in need of help with grooming, smell, or cleanliness. A facial, a manicure, a haircut, or a spa treatment could certainly be interpreted the same way.

But, there are exceptions: Toiletries or grooming gifts of "luxury quality" are acceptable from very dear or very personal friends.

I think you should consider the intent of the giver. If you think it is their intention to insult you, then, by all means, be insulted! If you think it is their intention to pamper you a bit, them thank them graciously and enjoy the experience.

A facial is a great gift! Because facials are usually costly, many people choose not to splurge! To get one as a gift is a nice way to be pampered and feel like you are doing something for yourself! A facial is like a message, it restores blood flow to the face and you glow when you come out! A 25 year old who was insulted and thought you were suggesting she look old has major issues with herself! You should write her a not and express your appreciation for her and tell her there is no hard feelings, you just wanted her to have some time to pamper herself! and what better asset than one's face! (unless she needs some work on her mind, you can get her a session with a shrink! Just kidding!!!!)

I could see how some ladies who are self conscious about their looks might take this gift the wrong way. A better way to give a pampering gift is a spa basket for at home, OR a day trip for the two of you to the spa...the gift of your time is always nice, and its fun to do facials with your girlfriends.

Oh, heavens, NO ... I would appreciate a gift like that very much. Facials are very relaxing.

A facial is not a cure for aging skin, and receiving a gift certificate for one is not an indication that the recipient is looking aged or haggard.

It is like a day at the spa -- a nice relaxing event that re-energizes the spirit, and the skin gets a little bonus, too.

Maybe a better gift would have been a day at the spa for both of you. That way you would have time to spend together while being pampered. While I think your gift is very nice, I can see how some might take it as if you were handing them a stick of deodorant.

Absolutely not. Change the spin on this conversation. Emphasis to her the pampering aspect and how the health spa is a place of serenity and calm, focused on wellbeing and beauty. She should have been grateful and offer to go with her next time so you can share the experience together. Thats what health spa's are about, its not like you booked her a free consult to a plastic surgeon!

Spa, for me!? Sign me up!! I think most people would enjoy any spa experience. Is it possible to just get a gift certificate for the spa without specifying what the person gets? That might be better. I don't see why anyone would think you were implying anything other than you want them to have a chance to pamper themselves.

A facial is a great gift! They're so relaxing! They aren't intended to make you look young - they just clean your skin thoroughly and increase the blood circulation.
