how do i find out how much of the money that is raised actually gets to the people that need it

If its a big charity you can find out at Charitynavigator.org, if its a small one you will just have to go and look them in the eye and ask for a financial report. If they will not give you one then you will know.

Much $$$ in the larger organizations goes toward a community pot that all will benefit from. They are also having to pay the salaries of their employees too, however, the the cost of running the charity. You are better to stay with a smaller organization that doesn't have as much overhead. A few good ones to try are:

Ask the charity? I'm sure they will all have diferent answers so depends on which charity?

A few pennies in the pound reaches who you intended the donation for.

And the agencies workers who knock the door for your bank details etc, what a stupid expense

if they pay 10 cents on the dollar you're lucky....(see if you can find the CEO'S SALARY on line, that should tell you something)....

call their fundraising department and ask them, or ask for their annual report with accounts
