You're making more of a fluata than an empanada.

If you're going to the supermarket, you can buy premade pie crust (Pillsbury) in the refrigerator section next to the canned bisquits and canned cinnamon rolls.

I would use the pie crust to make the empanadas.

You can but it's not ideal. Baked dishes like empanadas are better made with corn tortillas which you can also find in the supermarket.

Wheat flour tortillas give a very doughy, heavy result and are better when you fill them ( beef and cheddar would be OK ) but dont bake them in the oven. Use them like a fajita or a burrito instead.

no, the dough is the same but it has to be raw (try a flour tortilla mix and make ur own) put the filling in raw dough, then deep fry in cooking oil! also known as a chimichanga

No probably would not taste the same! it's a dough that is used. but NOTE Bottom of this anwser.
BEEF EMPANADAS

(Yield: 4 servings)
1 pound lean ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
1 4-ounce can chopped green chilies, drained
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1/4 cup shortening
Cold water

In a large skillet, cook ground beef and onion, stirring occasionally, until all pan juices are evaporated and meat is well browned.
Spoon out any remaining fat.
Stir in chili powder; cook for 1 minute.
Stir in tomato sauce, green chilies, sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; heat to boiling.
Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until pastry is moist enough to just hold together. Shape into a ball.
On a lightly floured board, roll half the pastry into a 1/8-inch-thick circle.
Using a 5-inch round plate, cut out 4 circles. Repeat with remaining pastry.
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Spoon some of the filling onto one half of a pastry circle; brush edges lightly with water. Fold dough over filling; press edges together with a fork.
Place on an UNGREASED baking sheet.
Repeat with remaining pastry circles and beef filling.
Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.


Delicious Chicken Empanadas


INGREDIENTS:

FILLING:
-3 Tbsp. Butter
-1 3/4 cup shredded cooked chicken
-3 Tbsp. Chicken Broth
-1/4 tsp. each jalapeno salt, pepper, cumin, chili powder, garlic and onion powders
-3 ounces of cream cheese, cubed and softened
-1 cup colby-jack cheese

PASTRY:
-1 1/2 cups flour
-1/2 tsp. salt
-1/2 tsp. paprika
-1/2 cup cold butter
-4 to 5 Tbsp. cold water
**These empanadas can also be made with taco meat or different types of cheese! Also, when I am short on time, I sometimes use the pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts that roll out!

DIRECTIONS:
(You can make the filling either in the microwave or in the skillet)

1.) In a large skillet, melt butter; stir in chicken broth, seasonings and cream cheese. Stir until melted.

2.) Remove from heat and add chicken.

3.) For pastry, combine flour, salt and paprika in a bowl; Cut in butter until the mixture resembles course crumbs. Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until a ball forms.

4.) On a floured surface, roll out pastry to 1/16 inch thickness. Cut with a 2 1/2 inch round cookie cutter (or use the top of a cup dipped in flour).

5.) After circles are cut out of dough, mound a deaping Tsp. of mixture onto half of each circle. Top with tsp. of shredded colby jack cheese. Fold dough over filling. Press edges together with a fork to seal.

6.) Place on ungreased baking sheets. Repeat with remaining filling and pastries circles. Bake at 375' for 15-20 minutes or until golden.

7.) ENJOY!!! These are so yummy!
