An occasional hamburger is most likely okay.
However, the extra fat can be "converted" to cholesterol by your body.

As the people say, "Moderation is the key."

How much higher than normal? Do you love butter and ice cream as much as I do? My Chol level is higher than it should be considering my diet and general health. I think it started going up as my coffee drinking drifted higher. This fits in with the dehydration theory. I've also heard somewhere that as we age, we feel less thirst which could be another risk factor for dehydration. BTW, my MD did tell me to drink more water. Some doctors are more than just drug pushers. I did hear of a doctor insisting on drugs for an older women whose chol. was very high. She refused the drugs, changed her diet and drastically dropped her chol level and balanced it out "good" and "bad." As for the argument below that "bad" chol. isn't bad because it serves a vital role in our well being, point taken. However, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing (unless you are Mae West). This could be said of ordinary fat. Since too much bad chol. is correlated with hear disease and death, I think it's still fair to call it bad unless you think it will be offended. I really like McGhee's post below. The one thing I find self-contradictory is the idea that diet does not affect Chol. level. Perhaps, what MG means is that eating less chol. won't solve your problem. There are many schools of health that discuss blood PH levels and the impact of overly acidic blood. This is something that can be impacted by what we consume from everything I've ever heard on the subject. So how could diet NOT affect chol level, even if you are looking at this from the blood PH perspective? As for the argument that genetics plays a part and that even some generally healthy people need drugs to lower their chol., I think that belief may be the result of a highly successful marketing campaign by drug manufacturers. Sure genetics is involved, but that doesn't mean you can't go the route of eating correctly unless perhaps you are talking about people who can't live without their bratwurst and want to take a pill that helps them reach the age 57. Drink some water, cut down on the animal products that you know may be contributing factors, exercise, get your heart and respiratory rate up often and research chol. lowering foods such as avocado and olive oil. I have seen some vegetarians who don't eat meat but who also don't eat enough green leafy veggies. You've got to get your nutrition from somewhere. If you are going to go veggie, make sure you do it right. - Best Luck.

Of course.
There are two types of cholesterol in your blood. HDL (Good cholesterol) and LDL (Bad cholesterol). LDL, or low-density lipoprotein is what gets built up in your blood stream if you eat food that has high trans-fat such as hamburger (!), any type of fried food, mayo, egg yolk, shrimp, etc. You can decrease your LDL level and increase your HDL (the good stuff) by changing diet to include at least some of the following: fruits & vegetables, fish, whole wheat, etc. You may want to start making changes little by little, such as changing butter to extra virgin olive oil, mayo to avocado, chicken legs & thighs to chicken breast, etc. then gradually move to removing high LDL food from your diet. It helps to exercise too!

Any red meat is high in cholesterol.
If you are having hamburger patties cook them in a broiler or grill where the fat drips away.
If you are cooking it for spaghetti sauce make sure you drain it well.
It is the fat that is bad.
You could get ground serloin or chuck that has less fat in it to begin with.
