Basically my issue is this...I applied at a bank, they denied me the job because I have a charge off on my report regarding a repo/forclosure of a home. Now, not that the companies care to find this out but, at the time my husband and I made ourselves available to the leinholder to resolve the issue, we'd give them all info they wanted when they called but would never return our calls when we'd try to contact them. We didn't even get far enough to get any kind of system set up to pay off the account before we began having issues contacting them. How can we be expected to fix something like this if they won't talk to us? And how fair is it that a company won't hire you for something you have no control over? Especially if it's a company where they don't handle large sums of money and you'll be touching or have any access to company funds. It's a receptionist position for goodness sake.

To answer the first question posed...when I contacted the bank they informed me it was due to that charge off that I wasn't being hired.

To respond the the next two, keep in mind the new job I'm going for is not finanacial, it doesn't deal with money and I will not be handling money or have access to company accounts or funds.

Companies have a theory that your past behaviors are indicative of your future behavior. So, if you are irresponsible with purchases and your money in general then how can they trust you with theirs? The best thing you can do is go to a Credit Counselor and see how you can get these things removed from your credit report.

Most companies do anymore...It speaks to your character and responsibility levels. Just because you don't work for a financial institution, doesn't mean you can steal from the company. This is the same reasons insurance companies now pull a credit report, to determine how responsible you are. A lot of companies and insurers spend millions of dollars for research in order to limit their risks, people with poor credit (Statistically) aren't as responsible, and are poorer drivers. I'm not saying that you are in this category, I'm just giving you the reasons why everyone pulls a credit report anymore. Good luck.

It is very difficult to get any kind of reference from previous employers. Most will only verify start date and end date, ending salary (maybe). Sure doesn't give much indicator as to what kind of employee you'll be.

Your credit report is considered an indicator of your ability or lack of ability to manage your responsibilities. Almost any even remotely financial job will require a credit check.

A receptionist might be privileged to phone messages, package and courier deliveries. Not to mention things like opening and sorting mail, folding letters and/or documents into envelopes for mailing, and similar adminstrative handling of documents.

Credit is considered a personality profile of your responsibility. It doesn't look good to the bank stockholders to have an employee with a charge off credit history in a banking institution.

Did they send you a letter and say that was the only reason? Or are you assuming that because it came up in conversation?
