i'm guessing it had more to do with his terrible body odor(refuses to shower several days in advance of a fight)

According to Vitale: Lindland did not knock himself out. Vitale countered the throw and knocked Lindland out.

it's more like knocking himself out has to do with his oddly shaped head.
