Does he really mean no?

In September i went to a soccer field notnoticing he was there with his team. He kept looking at me during practice. In the hallway he was with his friend behind me and i was with mine then started singing, i looked at him and he looked straight at me.I always would see him in the hallways because that would be the only time i see him throughout the day. He would look at me sometimes and others(lately try not to but trying to walk a little closer to me? And lately he has just been ignoring me(shy?) Last year he was in most of my classes and when he made a joke publicly he would always look at me and ignore everyone else. Then my friend heard him talking to his friend and said that i'm cute. I asked my guy friend and (sort of friends with him) he asked him if he liked me, he replied no(shy perhaps since only one of his friends knew what he said about me? And nobody was there when he asked) Did he really mean no? Or was he just shy and didn't know what to say around somebody he isn't very close with?

You can try asking "Is there any chance you'd like to hang out with me, or go out with me?"
