Bring to a boil.
Cook to 300 for hard crack stage.
Remove from heat add flavor and color.
Pour in a cookie sheet that has been dusted quite heavy with powdered sugar.

RE:
Is there a quick way to make rock candy? Or if not how long does it usually take?

I have grown rock candy in the classroom and it has always been a long process. I suppose the only thing
you MIGHT be able to do would be to try to make your sugar solution nearly as saturated as possible.
More sugar less water would probably let the process begin more quickly. Getting a "seed" crystal of
sugar on the string also would help. (I am not sure how you could get
that initial crystal to stick.) If you get any better ideas, let me know.

The rate at which the sugar crystals grow depends on the rate at which sugar molecules crystallize onto the
seed crystals -- which, in turn, depends on how fast water evaporates from the solution. I know of no
"catalyst" that will affect that rate.

Yeah buy it. It takes weeks to make rock candy because the sugar molecules have to bond together and even then there's no guarantee it will come out tasting good or even be edible. I'd go for buying some.
