I am an atheist and I can tell you that MANY atheists are exactly how you describe; they profess to be atheist for the shock value. I think that someone that is truly an atheist is willing to discuss their beliefs with you rationally and without judging you for your beliefs. People that bash Christians do not represent all of us. I respect your beliefs; if you want to pray in school or whatever you should have that right.

I personally have simply never believed in God, even when I was very young. My entire family was religious and when missionaries would come to the house I would go hide. I just never believed and never felt comfortable with religion. Some people become atheists out of anger, they are the ones that will ask "if God is a loving god, how come....."

People are atheists for a variety of reasons, so don't cubby hole us. I have given church a shot before, it just didn't work for me.

If wanting to be different means not following stupid rules than yes. And I commend anyone who thinks for themselves.

Actually I think most atheists were the geeks and nerds. The ones with the high GPA. The punk kids didn't really care too much about religion.

Hows that ? Sorry that your just a sheep lost in some herd that is religion. Atheists aren't trying to be different. We are just smarter and more rational. So you naturally as a sheep fallowing the herd (religion, probably christianity with a question like that.)are afraid of that and consider us different. Sorry we think for ourselves, and only believe in things that are real. And where i live atheists aren't the ones who are different it's you people, there's far less god worshipers here. A lot of down to earth level headed thinkers if ya know what i mean.

Atheists aren't different, we are the default model for rational humanity.
Why, were you one of those who was always really scared of the punk rockers in high school and sort of envied them too?

Some probably. I myself was a cheerleader, played softball, ran track, was involved in many different clubs and was on the Yearbook staff. Oh, and I was 19th in my class with a GPA of 3.3.

Nope... I was a comic book geek and hung out with the artists and band geeks.

I didn't want to be different at all... just left alone.

No, atheists are like the A to A+ students who didn't have to pray before a test or exam.

No, those are more like Satantist. Atheist are just reasonable people: rich, poor, educated, uneducated etc....

The common thread amongst all atheists is that we are reasonable when it come to the question "Does God Exist"
