In the Bible God promises His Word will endure. He basically promises to protect it. Where is this promise for tradition? If tradition is equal to the Bible then why didn't God promise tradition would endure?
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
1Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Jedidiah - Catholics actually teach that tradition is equal to the Bible.

Father K - I would suggest by the verse provided God is the one who insured His Word would stand. Unless you say God could not keep his promise without the Catholic church. As to 1500 years is it just possible that people did not teach sola scriptura for that long because they really had little access to the Bible? They did not know that tradition should not be reverenced?

Father K - I suggest to you that what was preached in most of the churches at that time was the letters that make up the Bible. Not tradition that is condemned by the Bible and specifically taught against by the Bible Things such as Mary being sinless which the Bible quite simply states is not so. Things such as adding works to salvation. Things such as praying repetitive prayers. These are all man made traditions that have no place in Christianity.

spiritroaming - I know there were many things that Jesus did that were not in the Bible. But if you are honest you must admit that many of the traditions of the Catholic church do not date to the time of Jesus. For example the rosary. Praying to the saints. Praying to Mary and exulting her to a position nearly equal with Jesus.

Perhaps I love you more - Actually I ask questions like this hoping to enlighten people who are in the dark. People who have become bogged down with man's tradition that keeps them from God. Tradition that says you need a man to go to God for you. My heart is far from hard. My heart aches for those who allow tradition to keep them from a full relationship with Jesus.

What can I say, but AMEN!
I just had a conversation with Romancatholic who claims that John 20,30-31 is a proof for Tradition. But, not only John doesn't speak about Tradition (or Jesus' words) but about Jesus' miracles, but also he claims there that what he wrote is ENOUGH for salvation of those who believe in Jesus!
So, that's what we believe: Bible is ENOUGH! Yes, Jesus said many other words and did many other miracles, but all that we know about what he did and said is in the New Testament!

Normally I wouldn't take the time to answer such a question since I know that the person who asked it doesn't want to hear facts, but I think it is needed here.
Truth: The story of Christ would not be written if not for tradition, oral tradition, since the early Christians had no way of writting it down until the year 54 CE or close to that date which is the earliest gospel and the letters of Paul started around 37-40 CE. Therefore until that time tradition started off the Church.
Truth: The Bible canon was put together by the Catholic Church in the early Church since there was confusion on which books to add or not even have as part of inspirational readings. This lead to the first New Testament Canon, since the OT had been past down by tradition over many centuries.
Tradition and Scripture do go hand in hand, the Lord Christ, said, He who divorces his wife and remarries commits adultery, but this most Protestants push aside out of convenience.
Truth: The Bible schism of the 1500's was done because of a disgruntled man, who thought was being persecuted by God himself because he could not ever please God, and be sinless. So he extracted what he thought was unnecesary becuase it was the greek version of the OT, when in reality all the NT was in Greek and he accepted it, again because he had his own agenda.
Truth: The scripture used by yourself further strengthens tradition since the Word of the Lord is scriptural and traditional, you cannot have one without the other.
These are just some theological and historical truths. I recommend that you actually look some up before making such claims as "sola scriptura" because to follow Gods word, is to do as Christ did, said and lived, and again this can only be done with tradition.
God bless you and even though I truly believe this means nothing to you, because your heart is already hardened, I pray that you and yours be blessed always.

The Catholic faith is certainly rich with tradition, but, unfortunately they are not rich in many other areas, such as the study of God's word, or living by that Word.
Mind you, some traditions are beautiful, but not most of the ones they hold as equal to the Bible.
For instance, it is tradition in a Catholic mass to recite the Lord's prayer. Do they not realize that this was not meant as an actual prayer, and that repetitive prayer is actually wrong according to the Bible they say they "own"? The prayer is a guide to things that should be included in one's devotional time. My brother, still professing to be a Catholic despite his truck driver mouth, and MANY other things, prays every day....the Lord's prayer. He has no idea what it is to spend time with God in prayer.
Anyway, I love family traditions, and our church has a couple of "traditions" like the huge tree for Christmas that ONLY the kids can decorate in fellowship hall. The Christmas Eve service being only worship songs, picked by those there. And so on.
God bless.

Edge, God's Word included the thing Jesus said and did that were not written about. In all honesty, do you believe that Jesus did and said ONLY what was written after He was long gone from this earth in bodily form? Before the Bible, or letters, everything was passed down by word of mouth, by Tradition.
Jn 21:25 "There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written"
Edge - you can do the research and see just how far back these date. There is not enough room on here to put it all.

Simple, traditian is strictly human in nature. Even the traditions of worship practice are human in nature, and subject to change with the times.
Jesus' entire being did, in many ways, fall into the tradition of the times, because, he had to be able to speak to people in a way that they would understand.
The ingenius thing about the word of God is that wether or not traditions themselves change, the Word still remain valid and pure.

I, personally, don't think that it is all literal as your question makes "The Word" out to be.
And, again, my personal take on tradition: it is wayyyyyy over-rated. Tradition is part of the paradigm into which we try to force-fit an infinite God. Tradition is fine, until it gets in the way of faith.

its kind of implied. like you said, the bible and religion is part of a religious tradition, so if his word endures, so too will the tradition of following it.

The Bible is the final authority on God. Anyone that proclaims "tradition" as equal to or above Scripture, is a false prophet and a deceiver. The Pharisees did that, and they opposed God to no end. The catholics are the present day Pharisees.
