I know that there are different kinds of fasting, but let's stick with the usual abstention from food. How long did you manage to fast? What did you gain from the experience?

I don't fast often unless I really feel led by God. A couple of years ago, I was prompted to fast for the mother of a close friend of mine. I had never met this woman, but I was in prayer and felt a strong burden to fast and pray for her, partly because I knew that she had fallen away from God.

I really felt that God was leading me to fast for three days (which was the longest I've ever fasted), so I was obedient to that. I also told my friend about the fasting and praying for her mother.

About five days later, I received a call from my friend. She said "you're not going to believe this, but during the days you were fasting, my mom rededicated her life to God. She has become sick of the lifestyle she's been living and is ready to serve God again." Honestly, I didn't expect to hear anything like that so soon! This woman has since moved to the town where I live and also attends my church. She serves God with all her heart and is an amazing asset to the body of Christ.

Through this I've learned to be obedient to the voice of God when He puts it in my heart to do something and that He truly does answer prayer when it is in line with His will.

There are many was to fast as in the Bible. you can fast until evening and only eat the evening meal, you can fast for 3 days without food or drink other than water, you can fast for 7 days with only water, you can fast for 40 days and nights as Jesus did. There are other fasts. The fast until evening fast was what they did when they were at war with an enemy and were losing, they fasted and ate an evening meal so the soldiers strength would stay with them. They won the battle. (I did this fast for 1 full year-2 days a week) My church has people who have been doing this fast since the year 2000, every day. Fast as God leads you and read Isaiah 58 to see why you should fast. And remember, the first person you fast for should be yourself. Once God has dealt with the wickedness in your life, you can fast for others. (Read Isaiah 58 to understand this.)

For spiritual reasons I have fasted for two days. I feel the last twelve hours or so I was beginning to realize that I could look past my physical needs and begin to feel a sense of freedom from self. Two days was what our church had suggested for those who wished to participate. It was on a weekend so that most people were not working. Also, anyone who had a health issue was encouraged to support the others by prayer and not fasting. At no time was anyone made to feel that the "fasters" were in any way spiritually superior.

for a true fast you should dedicate it to God before you start.

I once went 21 days without food, only liquids, never lost any weight, and still had plenty of energy,

the only reason I broke the fast was because we had a special dinner in a couple of days,
and when you fast that long, you need to break it slowly. I usually do this with V8 juice, before I eat solid foods.

Every month I fast for 24 hours. Or close to it. It can be as spiritual as you decide to make it, and depends on your attitude towards the fast. If you are grumpy from lack of food, and complaining, you won't get as much out of it as you could. I try to keep a positive attitude when I am fasting, so that you can feel the Spirit more, and hopefully get what I want out of the fast.

About 45 minutes would have to be close to my record... I get really sweaty from all that exercise.. I start off taking it easy but you know.. it gets the better of me .. I am so impatient... I need a good instructor, I think. Someone to explain where I am going wrong... I have enough stamina to last for hours... with all the gym workouts I've been doing... and I recover quickly too. I may not be a young man anymore but I still know my way around.

Oh gawd.. Jack! I've jsut read your question again... LOL! I seriously thought you said ""lasted".. LOL. You crack me up!

Jack is a mind reader. I was JUST thinking about fasting.

I've never fasted more than 40 hours. It was a fundraising thing my youth group did to raise money and awareness for world hunger.

I have also been considering fasting sometime soon, just to detox and refocus myself. I'll keep you posted.

EDIT: I'm fasting today through Sunday now. Maybe I'll die and then at least Bongernet will be happy!

I've only been able to fast for 24 hours. At the time I was praying for my son, and the Lord let me know he was going to be OK, he just needed to go through some stuff first. My husband fasted for 24 days. He was really blessed, got filled with the Holy Spirit and was prophesying. It was awesome!
