Make sure you have backed up all your personal files as what you are about to do has the potential to destroy them this step is a last resort to get your system back working again. For XP: On start up press F11, then select your CD/DVD drive from list of locations, you will need to have put your OS disk into your Disk player. Then follow on screen instructions something like:- 1 Repair press R, 2 New Set up press Return, 3 To Exit press Escape. If you select option 2 you will need to press F8 to accept Licence conditions. You will be asked where to store your new OS usually C Drive. You will have a choice of three options I would recommend the option where you leave files structure in tact and rewrite new Windows file. {Press L} if this option fails to correct your problem then select full format, not the quick option, either of these actions WILL WIPE OUT ALL INFORMATION ON THE HARD DRIVE. Then wait about 40 minutes while it loads.

if you have the new windows cd just pop it into your drive and run it. it should either upgrade your old system ie windows 98 to xp or just copy over it. it will warn you what it will do. you shouldn't have to format (blank) the hardrive unless it is corrupt.
