I think thumbs down should be given when a person does not attempt to answer the question, is disrespectful, or obviously a troll.

What do you think should be the rules?

Why did I get 17 (and counting) thumbs down on this question when I answered the question respectfully and honestly and completely?

I agree! A thumbs down should never be given just because you don't agree with someones opinion. On the other hand, if the answer includes hate talk, demeaning answers, insults, etc, I give it a thumbs down! God bless you!!

To be honest it's neither. I won't thumb down an answer because I don't agree with it as everyone has the right to their own opinion. It's only when someone has left a completely ridiculous answer.

Freedom of speech = Freedom of Choice. You speak, I form an opinion. My opinion of your "words" is a thumbs up or down here on YA. In real life, it would be something different. So, no, there shouldn't be "even more" guidelines. Get your nose out of my freedom!

PS: You got so many thumbs downs because those 17 people felt you were wrong, and chose to express their opinion in that manner. Period.

Perhaps thumbs down should be automatcaly limited to 5 a day to stop those hateful Yahoos from making us all miserable.

I feel the way to get the thumbs down under control is for yahoo to note who gave the thumbs down or thumbs up. I think if people can't hide behind a cloak of anonymity that they'll be less inclined to give a thumbs down unless they truly believe the answer merits one.

Thumbs down mean nothing, don't let it get to you. My record for one question was like 26 or something. It doesn't even affect your points, ignore it.

Who gets to decide who are trolls and who are not?

Some are blatantly obvious, but there are some fundamentalists on this board that I honestly and truly cannot tell if they are trolling, or if they mean what they are saying.

Besides, if thumbs down on this site get to you, then this might not be the place to hang out.

What? You gave a bad answer. You take an unproven statement and act as if it's the most obvious thing in the world. It's disingenuous at the very least, if not outright dishonest.

My thumbs down are reserved for people who make bold lies, type in all caps, present misinformation, or do not answer the question. Personal opinions don't count unless they're presented as a universal fact.

because 17 (and counting) people think you're completely wrong

the same reason you would give me a thumbs down if i said witchcraft was the only logical choice

as far as thumbs down goes, they are given for the reasons you state, plus if someone thinks you're wrong
