I have never ever made pot roast before, so I need you to "dummy proof" your explainations. I have a Bonless Beef Shoulder Rib Roast thawing on the counter. I also have a 4 qt Crock pot. As far as veggies go I have nothing. I do have garlic salt (for flavoring?), salt and pepper, and of course water. Now what do I do?

To Cook a Pot Roast:

1. Rub the meat with the garli salt and pepper.
2. Heat a small amount of oil in a skillet and sear/brown the meat on all sides.
3. Place meat in a roasting pan with a cup of water then into a 350 degree oven and bake until desired doneness.
4. If cooking in a crockpot/slow cooker, follow above steps and cook the meat on low.

**NOTE** It will taste better if you have veggies such as carrots, onions, celery and potatoes to cook with it. When roasting in the oven, place the veggies in the pan first then place the meat on top of them. Add a couple of beef bullion cubes in the water.

This is a typical pot roast recipe. To alter it, rub the garlic salt and pepper on the roast then follow the directions omitting the onions and garlic cloves. The other option is to do a little shopping before cooking this recipe.

This is how I do it... get a bag of baby carrots, 4-6 pealed potatoes (depending on how many people you are feeding), an onion pealed and quartered, 2 beef bouillon cubes, pepper, seasoning salt, crock pot, and a roast. Put the potatoes in first, then the bouillon cubes, then the carrots, put about a cup of water in (for the veggies to cook), place the roast in (fat side up), season it with pepper and seasoning salt to taste, place onion on top of the roast, put the lid on, and set the crock pot on low for 10 hours. Tender and awesome! With the bouillon cubes even my 9 year old eats the carrots (and wants more!!!!). Just remember, the key to tenderness is cooking it slow on a low setting. Good luck, you'll do great!

You can either "slow cook" it in the crock pot...or you can do the conventional oven thing, If you do the crockpot, cut up the meat into about 3 pieces. Season it w/ the salt and pepper...put about 1/4 c of water in it, put the crockpot temp on slow and cook all day..about 8hrs. If you put it in the oven lay the whole piece of meet in a pan, season w/salt and pepper or garlic salt and pepper.. Put the oven on 300 degrees and cook for 21/2 -3hours. This will make a broth. when the roast is done..drain the 'pan drippings' put them in a skillet w/ 3-4 Tbls of flour. Wisk this and slowly add water until the gravy is smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.
just a suggestion. You can add a can of 'gloden mushroom soup,1/2 c water and a pack of onion soup mix. mix all these ingrediants together and pour over pot roast. Bake at same temp and same amount of time......it's really good!!!!

I just made a pot roast yesterday! I made it in my crock pot -

I took a 4 lb roast and coated with salt pepper and some flour
added a can of cream of mushroom soup with roasted garlic
1/2 can of beef stock (or water is fine)
1 package of onion soup mix
sliced fresh mushrooms

Add all in crock pot (line with the liners so you can have easy clean up) cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4.

It was so tender and it makes its own gravy. I made that with baked potatoes and corn.

Season your pot roast with the garlic salt and pepper and sear first in hot oil. Then place in your crock pot. If you have Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, or barbecue sauce, you can make a broth by adding 1 cup of water with 2 T Worcestershire, 2 T Soy Sauce, or 2 T barbecue sauce. Pour over the top and cover. Cook on low in your crock pot for 6 - 8 hours or until meat is tender. Take roast out and let it sit for 15 minutes. Thicken the broth and season to taste. Slice roast and serve with broth over noodles.

Put your roast in the crock pot with a can of beef broth and cook. If you don't have broth just add some water. Cook on low if you want to eat it tomorrow or high if you want it later tonight. It will take at least 4 hours on high in the crock pot. You could put the roast in a baking pan add water, cover and cook at 350* for about an hour and a half. Season to taste.

You start by browning your roast slightly in some oil.
Then transfer to the crock-pot, & add onions or garlic, etc.
You need 1-2 cups of liquid; beef stock, beer, wine, or water.
Cook on LOW until tender, 8-10 hours, or thermometer 160F.
Include any root vegetables: potatoes, carrots, turnip, etc.

Remove roast when done, reserving the liquid.
Combine 1/4 cup cold water with 2 tbsp flour or cornstarch.
Add to liquid, with browning sauce if available,
cook, stirring often until thickened into gravy.
Serve with vegetables, greens, &/or noodles.

I put in a cup or two of water and put in the meat. For flavoring I use soy sauce (not too much), garlic, salt, sugar, oregano or taragon. If you do put veggies, I could use any combination of potatos, tomato, carrots, celery, onion. Let the crock roast pretty much all day until the roast meat becomes very tender.
