i "pooper scoop" his litter daily, and remove the wet clumps as well. i change the litter on thursdays, saturdays, and tuesdays. i have not changed the brand of litter since i first brought him home. my friend said male cats see thier litter box and thier poop as thier property, and its his way of "marking his territory". could it be that he is getting mad when i remove his poop because he meant to put it there in the first place? this does not make sense to me, because i know cats like to have a clean litter box. i have also never heard of a male cat pooping to mark his territory.

Have you changed your brand of kitty litter or left the kitty litter in there for longer than usual without changing it? He may be protesting. Cats are very very picky about their litter boxes.

Since this is a new behavior, a check up at the vet is in order. A number of medical conditions could cause this.

If he's healthy, I think your friend is correct. If he is using the litter box except right after you scoop it, he is likely "re-scenting." Yes, cats do mark with their stool. An easy solution is probably to leave a bit of his waste in the box when you scoop or clean.

Did something change in the environment or to his routine recently? That could cause him to feel the need to mark. If so, and it can be changed back, do so. If not, maybe try a product called Comfort Zone. It's a synthetic pheromone that helps to reduce anxiety and marking.

How old is he? Cats, especially older ones, are very picky. Did you recently move the litter box? Sometimes cats will act out in protest if they disagree with something. Maybe he just doesn't like where the box is placed. Try moving it around every now and then to see if he likes it somewhere else better. If this doesn't work, maybe he doesn't like the brand of litter you are using, or the box itself, or the amount of litter you are putting in. Try experimenting with these variables, and if the problem persists, I think it best to consult your vet.

Sounds like he definitely has something he's trying to tell you about his litter box. Cats prefer an unscented litter. Buy a different litter and a cheap extra litter box. You can even experiment with just a cardboard box. Leave the 2 boxes out and see which one he uses. He'll probably give you the "best answer" to this question.

Are you sure he’s not sick? It sounds like he’s trying to grab your attention.
