Yes. I served a tour in Iraq and we had many navy corpsman on the front lines with us. You won't exactly be shooting side by side unless in a rare circumstance, but you will be very close to the action. You will also be required to carry a weapon. Thats the point of corpsmen, to help the wounded marines directly in combat. Not sure about the Army combat medics though. If you were debating on which one to join, I would go corpsman, because you make your own rules (sort of) when your with the Marines, because your in a different branch.

Navy Corpsmen like Army Combat Medics are not expected to engage in offensive combat operations however they are required to defend themselves and their patients while in combat.
The U.S. Marines Corps does not have a medical branch thus all of their medical personnel are detached from the U.S. Navy......

Yes, i was a combat medic kicking down doors, and eventually a flight medic shot down in Baghdad. The army calls their combat medics "Health Care Specialists" becasue people join to do that job, and don't want to be in combat usually. When i was in Iraq, there were 2 navy corpsmen with us. They never left the base, never did anything, and just sat around and got fat. If you want combat, join the army, if not, navy is a good place for you. I don't wish what happened to me on anyone. The bronze star and disability check are little comfort when you are in pain every day.

Good question! All medics carry a weapon and fight when called upon albeit their primary task at hand is to tend to the wounded. All medics are combat infantry trained.

When assigned to a Marine unit in the field you are armed. Your choice of weapon is your own. But, the Law of Land Warfare (Geneva Conventions) only allows you to use the weapon in defense of your own life or that of your patient.
