why does my tv get better reception when i stick a paper clip in the back then a regular tv antenna or my houses antenna?

It probably means that the center electrical contact on the TV's antenna in jack is worn or sprung outward.

One thing you could try is to take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend a little squiggle in the wire that sticks out of the male side of the connector. While your at it, make sure the wire sticks out and is not bent over.

This center wire needs to make good contact with the center electrical contact that is inside the antenna in jack.

Always and with no exceptions , if a paper clip gives better reception than an external antenna there is only one possible answer ! Your Antenna is faulty and that includes the lead that plugs into the antenna socket on the Tv

Yep even on two diff antennas if the fly lead is faulty that you are using to plug from ant wall socket to Tv ant socet ! Otherwise it would mean that the TV is faulty ! very unlikely if it works better on poorer aerial ! ( paper clip ).
