A storybook land theme, where there are a variety of characters and settings, as to not be gender specific.
You could include: dragons, princesses, princes, castles, talking toads, bears, fairies, hills, streams, forests, flowers, clouds, a wishing well, etc.
Each wall could be a continuation of the next, as if to create some sort of story. The children could help with the content of the story.
In addition, incorporate something personalized for each child (which is removable, so that it can change as your group does). Ex: Birthday balloons, Good behavior stars, "What I want to be when I grow up" wishes, etc.
Have fun, Be creative, and try to Involve the kids.

pictures of the cover of the stories you'll be reading. Also have one of those big round carpets; call it the Magic Carpit or Smile Circle or something. So beanbags or comphy pillows are fun for the kids to sit on while they listen to the story. For the walls: book with a worm coming out (cartoon-type book worm)

lots of bean bags or mats for kids to sit on, it makes kids feel more welcome and comfortable.
maybe you could have a bunch of toys ready, and depending on what kind of story you read, you can put those toys out.
like if you read about dinos, put out dino toys, if you read about fish, you could put out fish plushies.
also, you could get posters and hang them on the walls according to the story. like posters of planets if your telling a story about a space adventure.
i think stuff like that would really make the kids excited and get into the story better. changing their environment often like that could really stimulate their immaginations too!
