I have done this in psychology, what ive studied for 5 years now :) - it is a nervous disorder.
Panic attacks relate to the CNS (Central Nervous system), and partly to a persons mental agility, i.e the breaking point that they cant take no more and causes the person to have a panic attack.
That is just what i can remember from memory- best professional bet is relying on good old Google if you want more medical and in depth answers.

Anxiety disorder. I have it. I am not on meds for it because I THINK I can manage them on my own, BUT I do go and talk to a therapist about them. I get really stressed and it causes my heart to race and it feels a LOT like I am having a heart attack. I used to get them in public places until I started going to Karaoke nights, I love to sing and this really helped me a lot. I don't drink so I have a good time and just sing my heart out.
Find something that gets you to face whatever it is that is causing the panic attacks and try and turn it into a positive experience. BUT you definitely need some guidance through them. A good therapist is worth their weight in GOLD!

You can have an anxiety disorder or agoraphobia. There are a few diagnosis for this problem. Go to a doctor who specializes in this area. Going to a general psychiatrist could lead you into being misdiagnosed. There is help. You can recover fully, don't give up.

could be anxiety.... but then I guess it would be anxiety attacks if that was the case... I suffer from anxiety and can be managed in a wide range of natural and synthetic medicine. It also can be managed without drugs with the right support... First thing you need to do is contact your Doctor and get a diagnosis

As others have said, "panic attacks" are a form of anxiety disorder, or panic disorder. They're really a group of different sorts of disorders that can show themselves as sudden fear, sweating, difficulty hearing, etc.

They're really not that uncommon, and I've had them for over 20 years. Don't worry: you're not "crazy." :-) There are ways to live with them, and although they can be disruptive, they don't have to get the better of you.
Good luck.

Anxiety disorder. There are certain situations that trigger the panic attacks. Such as, if you have had post traumatic stress disorder because of abuse, when a boyfriend/girlfriend hurts you, it might trigger your panic attack.
Or hospitals (for me). It can be something silly or something very, very serious. But, there are ways to control them. =)
