amazon.com sells it for 230, free shipping.

It's a great camera. Great reviews, great features, great rechargeable battery, etc etc (you've done the research).

If you want to be a pro, you might have to spend a little more and get a DSLR which can get pricey. but if it's your aspiration, go for it. If you are on a budget, the Panasonic is a great camera. The newer model FZ18 is 18x optical zoom and has a bit more features but is about 400. But the Fz8 is a great value. Trust your instincts.

Well, in my opinion, if you really want to become a professional photographer, I wouldn’t recommend starting on a point and shoot. It's a really nice point and shoot; but if you are looking into becoming a skilled professional, I’d start out with something a little more manual. Seeing that the camera you’re looking at costs about $300; that can get you the basics in the film SLR world. I’d recommend a Nikon N65(http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20261743.html?searchinfo=N65&item_no=11), which is what I started on, and buy a good standard lens, maybe a 28-90 Sigma macro. Stepping into the manual world will train you much more; even if it is film. With a manual camera you will learn how to manipulate your images and understand how they work.

ok what is the most your willing to spend on a camera? the reason i ask is you can get a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 for around $450 online. it ia a 10.1mp 12x optical zoom. Comes with the leica lens and is a great camera. it takes great pics and is worth every penny you spend. there are a lot of attachments for this camera and this is by far no point and shoot camera. you can go full manual or full auto but as you get use to it you step away from anything auto. if you go to
www.flickr.com and type in Panasonic lumix dmc-fz50 it will bring you to the group i am in and we have over 14,000 pics all taken with the dmc-fz50. ont thing this camera also does have is a hot-shoe for a flash besides the built in flash. this camera is classifies as a bridge camera because down the road you will have the experience from this camera to step up to a Dslr. some of us just refuse to carry around a bunch of lens to equal what we get out of just one lens on this panny. 35-420mm i think is good enough.

This camera won't take shots as good as those a real camera system will take (costing many thousands of dollars).

But....

It's a very nice camera capable of some good photos. It will let you learn the important basics of photography - composition, exposure, depth of field and focus. It has full manual override, so you can fiddle with the settings and take control of your shots.

GO for it, do the work with learning HOW to take photos, then upgrade to a proper camera system when you're ready - the camera will be far better than you (or most people) are for quite a while.

well yes it is good mp stands for mega pixels and that means it is your resolution of your camera 7.2 is quite good, but it's not the best. Your optical zoom is great the optical zoom is how far you can see with your camera like a telescope.

Good choice of a camera.

You cannot become a "professional photographer" however until you learn to spell "professional". Or learn to use Spell Check.
