Someone asked "What do you think fundamentalist Christians believe?"

and an Atheist replied "Fundies believe in ignorance, hate, and bigotry. I think they are the scum of the earth."

And people say Christians are hypocritical? What kind of example does this set for me? Does this atheist really "freely" think, or just conform with what some other atheists believe? Does anyone else this the answer is out of line?

BINGO
When you ask them a question. You have to make sure not to generalize, but they can ask all they want, and generalize all their heart wishes. There are many questions addressed by ' Christians...' that is all. They want an answer from all, and they don't consider that generalization.
Ask a question about other religions, and you will find that they hide behind the reason that they don't know that religion very well, but when it comes to Christians. They are so sure of everything.
I have yet to come across an atheist who is not in your face telling you you are wrong because you believe differently than they. At the same breath, they tell others they want to believe as they wish. That is hypocrisy at it's best.

If I were laboring under all the MISCONCEPTIONS you related in your question, I'd probably be an atheist too. Firstly, literal hellfire is not a Bible teaching, the Greek word "hades" and the Hebrew word "sheol" are the original words hell is translated from and both words in their original languages mean grave or pit. God's inspired word, the Bible states in Jeremiah 7:31: "And they have built the high places of Topheth, which in the valley of the son of Hinom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart", so if a loving God would not authorize this agonizing death on a temporary basis how much more would he not relegate persons to an eternity of tormenting fire. Sure Jude 7 in the Bible says, "So too Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them, after they in the same manner as the foregoing ones had committed fornication excessively and gone out after flesh for unnatural use, are placed before us as a warning example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire." Now really is Sodom and Gomorrah still burning today, of course not, but the expression was used to illustrate complete annihilation. My imperfect brain tells me that one who can create and perpetuate a universe can preserve a book (the Bible).as a reliable guide. Remember God's saving acts through divine warfare is justified. He alone is the reader of hearts, and if he did not take steps on behalf of the righteous what kind of God would he be. If I had bad, black-hearted and incorrigible tenants I would evict them and that's exactly what the God of heaven and earth is going to do, EVICT bad tenants.

I've noticed angry and/or hypocritical answers from both sides. Regardless, the issue I have is with the religion of Christianity. It's what is hypocritical...a 'loving' father sending his creation to Hell-making one in the first place is an unloving act and being omniscient, He'd know that there would be plenty that end up there.
Besides, I fail to see anywhere, an example of an individual spontaneously producing a complex life form.
Anyway, people are people and if you set your beliefs on the actions of one or of a group, you can't ever be sure. You should base your opinions on what evidence you have or are made aware of but be willing to change as new info becomes available.

As an atheist, I would like to confirm your suspicions... Atheists are hypocritical. Just as theists are hypocritical. Some of us are tolerant and understanding, as are some theists. There is no mold from which we all come, as the same is true for you.

For what it's worth, I don't think you're the scum of the Earth. I think you're the scum of the Universe! (Not really, just being a hypocrite. Hehehe...)

Well, yes, of course this answer is out of line. And no, this one particular atheist probably isn't actually thinking for him/herself, he's regurgitating what he's been told without actually researching what Christianity is based on. I myself am a Christian with a very strong faith, but I caution you to not lump all atheists, or Christians in the same category, just because one person has a close minded view.

Everyone is hypocritical....most people speak their opinion, and not the facts, the majority of Christians have never ever read the bible, they go to church for 2 hours on Sunday and think they are religious...Athiest may have points but if they try and get their point across using hate or ignorance, they are no better than the next. Believe in what you believe iin, do not be influenced by others opinions, read your respective bible and make your own interpertations...

Well, I don't necessarily think it has anything to do with conformity. From personal experience, it seems more like the other way around. As soon as I mention that I am Atheist, I get harassed...."Why?" "you will rot in Hell"...BLAH BLAH BLAH....I think Atheists are just sick and tired of being harassed all the time by self-righteous Christians.
I mentioned that I felt like most Christians were hypocrites....The reason I said this is because, Christianity is supposed to teach people to accept people for who they are...to not judge people lest you be judged....and here are all you guys judging, not only Atheists, but people with a different sexual preference then yours, different life style...and so on.

Most people who are into any religion or "religous group" are mostly hypocritical in fact most humans are hypocritical by nature has notthing to do with the fact people are athiests, christians or whatever I have found anyone who has strong beliefs about anythings are hypocrites.

I think it is hypocrytical as well... Not to judge people, but it seems most Atheists are Atheists because they're sick of Christians all being the same.. But the more Atheists I encounter I find that they're all identical, and most are simply atheists because they hate Christians, or a Christian has done them wrong.

I agree with the answer overall, but it is worded strongly. There really is no need to get in someone's face unless they 've gotten in yours first. Most atheists are so completely fed up with christians and their hypocrisy, that sadly, they may respond with harsher words than they may normally have. Besides, it's not so much that Fundamentalists BELIEVE in ignorance, hate, and bigotry, it's just that they seem to be mired in it. Because they don't open their minds to new things and only believe what they are told, they wind up stuck in ignorance, hate, and bigotry.
