Plants put seeds in different containers. Some containers are fleshy like plums and some are dry like nuts.
Dry come in two forms; pods with seeds inside and those that have no pod to open. Nuts always have single seeds.
Beans & peas are poded seeds while chestnut, hazel, hickory, and samara are the non pod form. The nut shell is another layer separate from the seed coat.

nuts are a fruit. Take an acorn. The acorn as a whole is a nut. The seed is inside of it.

Nuts are edible, seeds are not.
