Alright I know this sounds like some sort of Halloween question but...

I have been training my Boxer to do some simple tricks with treats, and it has worked beautifully! The problem I am facing now is getting her to perform the tricks without bribing her with treats. She simply refuses to do them if I don't have a treat in my hand or at least pretend that I have one (Which I think is kind of mean...).

Anyway, any tips or tricks to get her to do the tricks she has mastered without the treat? One of the ones I am talking about is the "shake" command. She does it as soon as she sits and I offer a treat, without me even having to say it! *sigh*...any advice would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Kit_Kat-

Thanks for the advice, but trust me I tried to no avail to teach her tricks without using treats, and nothing doing. I am not potty training her or teaching her simple commands like "sit" with treats, these she was already taught from a previous owner. I am really just trying to teach her some new tricks to stimulate her mind and give her something new to do.

Anyway thanks for all the advice, I will definitely try all these methods.

You could try giving her less and less (make her do more tricks for the treat). Start with her having to do 3 to 4 tricks to earn the treat and slowly make it more and more (just make sure you praise her after every trick so she doesn't think she did it wrong).

consistancy and reputition...eventually it will click into the dogs mind that treat is not needed and its okay to do the trick. also..when you work with the dog do it in a low stress environment and maybe after you have walked her so that she is more intune to listening to you rather than risisiting you. I don't use treats, however afterwards occassionally I give a reward by a treat but I don't do it all the time because then they know what is coming and will automatically expect that everytime. Keep being assertive and patient it will come.

Have you ever seen dog shows, where the owners run their dogs through all these different obstacles? Ever wondered why they always have their hand out and clenched? It's because they're acting like they've got a treat. And the end you'll notice the dogs don't get upset, They're just happy with a hug.

Lot's of praise when she does her trick. Trying petting and telling her good girl. It will take a little while for her to get used to the fact that she won't get a treat every time but she'll catch on.

she has been taught how to beg for food.
I never treat with treats I train with affection and this can be witha simple pat or a nice rub depending on your dog.
This is why I don't agree to the idea of training with treats.
I will say after doing a set of things like simple obedience and about a 1/2 hour of different things my dog gets a biscuit. but not every "trick"
