For 40 adults, I would get at least 10 half gallon jugs. If there are kids as well you might be able to get away with less, but better to have more than to run out.

1 cup is 8 oz. 4 cups is a quart, 16 cups in a US gallon.
Or 1 cup is roughly 250 ml. 4 1/2 cups is a litre in metric.
So a gallon would give 32 people 4 oz each.
If they're heavy drinkers, you might get 2 gallons.

for what a glass each in a 30 min period.
well presuming each glass is approx 500ml (roughly 1 pint),
40x 500ml =20,000ml or 20 litres, or about 10bottles (at 2 liters)
presuming on average they consume 1 glass, at 500ml per 30 min period.
not including spillage, people not filling their glasses to the top.
question now is how long do you want it to gone on for.
