The author, Benedict Carey, quotes Berkeley neuroscientist Matthew Walker as saying of insights we gather in our sleep, "It does make sense these insights come during REM [rapid eye movement sleep stage, where our most active dreams happen]. I mean, what better time to play out all these different scenarios and solutions and ideas than in dreams, WHERE THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES." (emphasis added).
Your mind was kicking around ideas, disturbing ideas, and playing out pieces of scenarios in a way that may be revolting to your consciousness, but were done when you were essentially unconscious. You are okay.
One thing they described was how sleep affected the learning process. You might try something like compare a set of pictures, like relatives or places, or find and go over some foreign words or phrases, and give your mind something more pleasant or constructive to work on. There has to be a sense of puzzle to it for sleep to take it as a task (read the article), but then your brain will at least carve out some time to attach to the task, diminishing time for whatever is spurring your nightmares.
Another tack, is to consciously focus on features that you may remember of the nightmares, then see what your fears or questions are. Addressing the things that disturbed your sleep while awake may take them off the table for your unconscious to bother with when you next sleep. As Carey's title says, the sleeping brain is "An active, purposeful machine tht comes out at night to play."

I believe the main purpose of a nightmare is to GRAB OUR ATTENTION. I believe that there is something you need to pay close attention to, weather that means actively avoiding something or someone , or fixing what is going on with you right now. Whatever it may be, it seems to be very important and with a sense of urgency. I hope this may be of help to you.

If you had three really bad dreams in 1 day then that probably means that you sleep too much.

That is your brains way of telling you that you are sleeping way too much during the daytime. Wait till night to sleep and the boogey monsters will cease

i think you're stressed out, or maybe something is bothering you or maybe your afraid of something. you should think about whats happening in your life and why your brain can't handle it and makes those nightmares. you should order your thoughts and try to figure out whats the problem, and solve it.
