most people dont remember to seprate the race from the business, a drivers first responsability is to a) win races?
b) finish consistantly? or c) sell product?
if you chose "c" then you understand the racing business better than most, yes Mikey waltrip sells far more product than most the drivers in the field, and napa would drop him in a heart beat if he were to stop, this is why hendrick is picking up Jr, it sure as hell isn't for his on track performance over the past year,
so though you might want guys to retire with dignity, rather that over stay their welcome remember that the sponsors dont realy want new blood driving the cars, they want familiar faces holding the product in the magazine

With all the open wheel drivers and young Busch devopment drivers, these veterens need to move on. Maybe they should invest in a team, or go to Busch were they could be more successful, but they need to give up the Cup series. They are no longer competitive and will probably never win another race in the Cup careers. I respect all of these drivers a lot, and am fans of most of them, but I disgree with them still staying their Cup rides.

Only those who choose to retire (Jarrett) or who can't get rides/sponsors (Marlin). The others have as much right to keep driving as anyone. It's a free market, and owners and sponsors, not fans, decide who does or does not have "it" any more.
And if an owner chooses to employ a reliable, but unspectacular, veteran driver, rather than risking his million-dollar business in the hands of a promising kid, that is HIS concern. How many Cup rookies finish more than two of their first ten races without wrecking? That's an expensive gamble.
I have to snicker at those who list Mark Martin among those who should retire. Mark's average finish this year is higher than most of the field. If he doesn't have "it" any more, neither do 30 other drivers.

As long as the will is there, I think they should stay at it. From what I;ve seen of the young Cup drivers, some (Ragan) should stay in Busch a couple of more years.
I'd love to see an old schooler like Mikey, Petty, or Ward Burton win one before the year's over.

How about any of these guys like Reed Sorenstrom, David Ragan, Scott Riggs, JJ Yeley, Tony Raines, Paul Menard and AJ Allmendinger. All guys who have been handed full time rides and never did anything to earn them, and haven't done anything with these rides. But most importantly, Michael Waltrip. This guy is terrible. The only reason he ever did anything is because he sucked up to Dale Sr and got a nice ride out of it. He only won the first 500 cause Dale Sr blocked for him , and it cost him his life. Go away Waltrip, you suck.

Dale Jarrett - A great driver in his prime, but like Mohammed Ali when he fought Larry Holmes, he just doesn't have it anymore.
Kyle Petty - great guy, but he's long overdue for retirement. It's hard to watch him out there running a second off the pace every week.
Michael Waltrip - I don't think he can succeed as both a driver and as an owner of three race teams. He can succeed at one or the other, but not both.

First and foremost Mikey. Kyle Petty should really get out of his car. Dale Jarrett IS backing down after the first 5 races or I would name him also.
