A bad CV joint makes a click, click sound for the outer and a clunk, clunk sound for the inner when turning. If, it a growl this is not the CV. May be a bearing as mentioned above or check the brake pads for wear. Also, look around inside the Wheel Wells, see if there a shinning spot where the tires may be rubbing.

There are Four CV joints on a front-wheel-drive vehicle. It is in fact easier and often times cheaper to replace the entire half-shaft assembly when changing CV joints. While the outers do wear quicker than the inners, it is not unheard of for the inners to fail, and if the whole half-shaft assembly is just a little bit more than a single CV joint and much easier to change, why not do the job right and have peace of mind?
Also, as another answerer stated, a failing CV joint is more likely to make a clunking or clicking sound. A growl is more indicative of a failing wheel bearing.

Drive down the road and turn the wheel slightly to the left and right. If the noise is noticeably worse in one direction than the other, It's a wheel bearing. CV joints don't usually growl. They make a snapping noise.

Is this by any chance a golf, if the noise is still there then it obviously was not the CV! On two of my golfs one time was a bearing in the gearbox so the actual driveshaft was rubbing on the housing of the gearbox and the other time it was the wheel bearing, CV´s normally click not growl

If it starts growling when you are turning and you have already rulled out the CV joints then the next suspect would likely be you power steering pump.

I agree with the wheel bearing diagnosis. My '02 Volkswagen had a distinctive growling sound when turning then we replaced them and all was well.
