Because we can only give "god" what we can imagine . We don't give god mechanical chacteristics ( like a machine ) because this would indicate he was created by someone superior . We give god human form because this is pretty much the highest form ( on earth ) we can imagine ( as opposed to a beaver or mouse - although some religions do give animal chacteristics to some gods ) . We endow this god with supernatural powers ( to create life , destroy life , fly , create heaven , and so forth) to answer the questions that we can't answer ( yet ) scientifically for things such as how did we get here , why are we here , what happens when we die , why do we die , etc . Some very few belief systems endow god with a more supernatural or advanced humanoid body .
The Bible says that man (not woman ) was created in god's image . Does this mean that god has a heart and lungs and kidneys and so on ? if he does , why ? why would a perfect creature need them . Of course this points to the fact that god as is known today is simply an imaginary figure devised by man to help present an answer to life's big mysteries Some people have trouble saying " I just don't know the answer yet . " ( Think Cliff Clavin - "Cheers !" .)

What is witnessed in life is what counts. God is a concept that supposedly everything is controlled and or originated from one source. That is the concept of God.
Some people think God is separate from humans, some that God is part of that existence, some that humans are parts of God.
We only have our senses to witness what we are. We witness molecular structures, so we say that God controls that, and yet we realize, that as humans, we are molecular structures ourselves!
So everything is molecular, some slimed into movement more and some not, including parts of ourselves. So where does this leave us with regards to the control we witness in and around us? Well it leaves us with the knowledge that there is molecular structure, some of which we can seem to vary if we make varying changes and some that we cannot.
So here we have control again in the mix, a control that we appear to have some but not very much control over that is in and of ourselves?
So God being something that controls that we have or do not have a lot of control over, God is part human, part molecular structure and part unknown, right?
That is the way I see it
Healing be unto you and yours and me and mine
In Forgive Affrimed Spirit

most religions believes god is some super powered human. in some an animal is the god (like the cow). The religions who think god has human form think this because they do not see humans as animals. So we are something else, something godly. This is why they have a hard time believing we have an apelike common ancestor, with apes today. The question Christians should ask is if god created us in his image, is god black, white, Asian, Indian, Hispanic or chimpanzee?

It's called Anthropomorphism. "Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics and qualities to nonhuman beings, inanimate objects, or natural or supernatural phenomena." -Wikipedia When human characteristics are give to God, human minds can better relate to a divine being. It's like the story of a Hindu walking along the road and desiring to become an ant so that he could tell the ant that it should move away from the plow that would soon destroy it's ant hill. So God became a human to describe God's being and nature. That is through Jesus, the incarnate word of God.

Giving God human characteristics aid sour understanding of existence.
The mistake made by most in that God created man in his image is the reverse of likely events; that man created god in their image.
In ancient times the Gods where given names that reflected their attributes. This was fine when there was a whole pantheon of deities but a little awkward when a single being proclaimed to be the one true God.
The bibles reference to various attributes of Yahweh are most likely the names and attributes of deities formerly worshipped by various tribes and peoples within and beyond the ancient Holy lands.
Many Gods throughout Europe and the East are one and the same. Yahweh is effectively no different to Thor, with Satan being a brother of Thor, Loki the trickster. Thor was of course the god of thunder, as was Yahweh - only difference being that Yahweh is described as a vengeful God.

i for one do not understand why people think like this. you have a soul and a supersoul, when you die your supersoul leaves the body, you have seven attempts at life, where you are placed on a level from 1 - 7, even if you attain level 7 you may still never see god, so does it really matter, people even go on god is cruel with all the earthquakes, tornados, volcanicanic eruptions etc, but if we are spirits that return to the spirit world how can he be?

It's kind of like how they made aliens on Star Trek. You take a human, and make one thing different (ridged forehead, pointy ears, etc). They did it on Star Trek because of a small budget and an even smaller imagination.
But, I don't know. I can't even figure out why some people believe in him, so I'm not in a position to say.

Because the human beings created God in their own image for their own convenience and confined him in churches, mosques, temples etc, to run the religious shows while they preached that God is all pervading ,etc, etc.

Because most are too narrow-minded to believe the unbelievable. they cannot get their heads around the possibility that God might be something completely inhuman. so they have to base God on something they're familiar with, like humans, or objects etc.
