No, I don't think it can create problems as long as there is an official language.

Yes, I think that a country should have a standard language for sales, business and other common transactions. This does not mean that a person's native language can not be spoken at home or in some situations.

Depends on which languages you're talking about.

In China, if you only consider Han chinese territory, there is almost one dialect in each city, so many languages, but this won't create problems as these people are all Han Chinese.

Then if you consider whole China, it would be different. (Tibetan, Uighurs)

The problem is not about language but identity and about national feelings. See Belgium, or Sri Lanka, or Uganda.
