I was was serving in the Marine Corps in Iraq but not recently I was severly wounded and unable to return to service so I havent been back, but becuase of this I know people who are still there serving. In my talks with them they say that things are most definatley getting better. The average Iraqi is tired of the insurgents and Bin Laden's Buddies and they are starting to help out with information and even in fighting against them.
By the way you are right not to trust the media to report what is really going on there. The battle I was wounded in was covered by the news orgs for days my family taped what they were reporting and I watched them when I got back and it made me laugh when I saw what they were reporting their facts were so off it wasnt even funny and even when most of them did report things that were facts they left out parts that would have put what they were reporting into contex.
Our news organizations no longer report news but they make the news by reporting things to present what they want you to see. What they think will get them ratings truth be dammed.

Yes, I do. Me, and all the guys I serve with.
Here's the truth as I see it. The individual Soldier and unit do not "observe" the statistics. While we know that the last two months have been great in terms of casualties, when I look around, nothing has changed. Things still seem to be just a dangerous. Bad guys still want to do us harm. We are still always on our guard. That part will never change.
While we may believe the statistics, they don't change the way we operate (at the Soldier level).

I'm retired military, I've lots of friends in Iraq.
Things are going well there. Better than expected -- when it comes to construction. It would be better if they could truly trust the Iraqis with whom they work. And, it doesn't take a genius to run the numbers when it comes to deaths there. We've lost on average about 2.3 per day. We lose more at home during peace time to stupidity like drunk driving. Still, always being on edge and never really knowing wears you down. And it doesn't get any easier when you come home. You always think about your buds you've left behind and the silence at night really gets to you.

I was in Iraq, it hasn't been that bad in a very long time. Soldiers, marines, airmen, seaman, die over there, but if you put how many of them die over to how many are over there, the ratio isn't too bad. The biggest thing that is taking our lives is IED'S or bombs on the roads to ambush are convoy's. They account for most of our troops death. The news just mentions the bad, but never talks about the good we do out there.

I currently have 2 nephews in iraq and a 3rd training to go.
I feel very confident about their safety. Don't believe everything the media tells you. They are in the pockets of the Dems and don't want you to know anything about the good stuff happening there until they can get Bush out of office.

I have several friends who have just got back, are there, or on their way there...the main thing I hear from them is it is not as bad as the news makes out...and that they wish the news would show the good things they are doing...that if they need death on their news casts, just talk about New York, Chicago, New Orleans, or LA...there are more killings there than in most places in Iraq...most of my friends there are Infantry NCOs or Officers, so they are out in it every day...

I have two cousins and an uncle in Iraq right now. It must be bad because NONE of them talk about it! If I ask about it they get uncomfortable and distant.
