I'm a large guy and because of my weight, my lower back has a hard time holding me up. I can't stand for more than 10 minutes before I have to sit down because of crippling pain. People say, "just loose weight and you're back will be fine!" Well, I can't exercise if my back won't let me. I need to know what I can do to strengthen my lower back so that it can hold me up a bit better. When that happens, I can do more exercising. Are there any kinds of medications that will help? Thanks to all who reply!

Get an exercise ball that is appropriate for your height. It makes it incredibly easy to do crunchs, sit ups, and free weights. These can all be done on a ball and will strengthen your core and back. Start using your back like this or your vertebrae will fuse.

Yes I know it sounds silly: I am over weight, have back problems, but cannot exercise. I faced the same except for the weight issue, as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, so exercise is restricted to 'low' if 'no' impact. However I chose Pilate's, just went one hour a week, was exhausted after the one hour session. The first exercise they teach you, flat on your back the breathing and then contract the lower pelvic muscles and tummy muscles. However took me a good month before I could do this and at one stage was in a state of panic! I noted in the shower I had 'lumps' and mentioned this to the instructor who tried had not to laugh. 'Lumps, that is muscle!' Since then the weight literally fell off me as I moved through the exercises. Pilate's offered me an excellent way to keep mobile, loose weight; not that I wanted to and tone up. However due to the back problem, they would NOT allow me anywhere near the Ball. You use your own body weight to tone up which for Arthritis was excellent and all at a very slow pace.
