are you dashing about, don't, lie down
i have never known pain killers to be any use when there is a real need, stop the pain killers, useless
take a nip of wiskey or brandy and lie down
running around you are forcing blood up to the damaged area until it heals,.....yes painful.

I know how you feel. I had a bad extraction last year like yours last year. It took well over a fortnight for the pain to subside but then I did have stitches in my mouth.
You probably don't need antibiotics as the dentist removed the infection when he removed the tooth and the root. The lump will probably be swelling and may take a week to go down. Your face will probably also feel as if you've gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson for a few days. Try to keep taking painkillers to a minimum, but you may need them for another couple of days in diminishing doses.
I used salt water gargles several times a day to keep the hole clean. I later swapped to something called chlorohex which was much better.
I had great trouble getting back into the dentist's but he and the hygenist have helped loads (after they worked out I was pertrified) by allowing me to do it gradually. First make it to the surgery, then into the room, then into the chair, then let them look in my mouth, then let the dentist examine me. Finally after a year I managed to let him drill another tooth.
Good Luck

hey friend, it is not such a serious problem, just rinse ur mouth with saturated salt water thrice a day and maintain good oral hygiene. dont bite anything on that side for the next one week. it is normal for tissues to get swollen due to infection.wait for the full infected fluid to drain from the cavity. and PLZ DONT touch and feel the area where extraction is done, u ll end up with a painful dry socket. and, if u have felt a hard lump in the extraction site, its nothing but ur jawbone, so nothin 2 worry abt it. avoid using too many pain killers as u may end up with a stomach burn. if the swelling is quite big, ice it from outside(place ice pack on cheek). most of all., DONT KEEP WORRYING ABOUT IT. IT'LL WORSEN UR PROBLEM. and just kick off the dental phobia. u ll feel good again in no time, believe me.

Oral infections are nothing to sneeze at...
A simple infection in the mouth can quickly lead to serious infections elsewhere in the body, expecially if left untreated. Go see your GP and see if he can have a culture grown to see if there is a bacterial infection in the socket. A simple blood test will give a reasonably rapid result. If you are feverish...you could be in trouble.
Your dentist was correct, in that the infection was likely held in the tooth. However, he may not have broken all the connectors that were holding the tooth in prior to pulling it, so he may have damaged the tissues (irritating the nerves) during the extraction.

Anything can happen. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth and one of my molars pulled out because it had a root canal done on it. I had more pain with my pulled molar than I did with the other 4 holes.
Percocet does wonders. It'll hurt for days afterwards because the root was so deep and because it was such a big tooth. DO NOT push on the bump. It could be a blood pocket.
You can either be in pain and worried or go to the dentist. Its up to you.

Hi,
I had a tooth out yesterday, it was top right side last back tooth. I had been in pain for over 3 weeks but it worsened since Thursday, my dentist took x-rays but got confused as I was getting pain all over, I was put on antibiotics yesterday but I couldnt stand the pain no more, I went to the surgery last night, my dentist re-xrayed this time the back teeth and there it was a big hole in my tooth, he wanted to fill it, I made him take it out. Apart from the pallet injection stinging a bit the extraction was very much painless, I am very lucky to have a gem of a dentist who wont hurt u if it can be helped.
Now my tooth is out, I was expecting pain but nothing at all.
Now, sorry to waffle on. When u have a gum infection and tooth has to come out. When u get injection to numb area u may find that the inffected area wont freeze, ur dentist may repeat the injections, and hopefully they care enough to help massage the gum which seems to help but not 100%.
U could be in pain for at least a week or until the infection is beaten. I had a humdinger of an infection, 3 weeks later I was still in pain and on stronger antibiotics. If ur still in pain, see ur doctor and get him to give u pain killers and if infection is still there , another course of antibiotics.
What happened to u in surgery was exactly wat happened to me about 5 years ago. I was in terrible pain and climbing the wall. The pain was comming from where I had an extraction years ago. My dentist took xrays and couldnt see anything apart from root left in. I asked him to take root out. Now as I said, my dentist is so very gentle, i had bad experience when I was a child and never went back since until I was in agony and my sister recommended the dentist i am with. Combing ur hair hurts more than my dentists injections apart from pallet ones that do hurt. It is so relaxing in the surgery I virtually fall asaleep during tre\atment, he can do wat he likes, i trust him that much.
Anyway as soon as my dentist injected me which was painless and so should have the rest of it, was it heck, I nearly ripped the arms off the chair as he pumped the stuf in, he couldnt beleive the pain i was in, it just wouldnt go away and was now worse than what i came in with. He felt awfull, he gave me another shot, as soon as the stuff went in I was in sheer agony, I was sweating heavily and the pain was worsening. I ended up with my wife holding both my legs down and my 2 sons holding each hand. I couldnt remember how many injections he gave me but I recon it was around 20 stabs but within safety guidlines cos I did ask as I was scared of dying on the chair.
Every injection brought more pain, my dentist , feelling bad said I cannot beleive this, I have never failed to anethasise a patient. In the end and many injections later, I was like u, I was in pure agony, the root had to come out, but my dentist said was I sure I was in as much pain as I said I was in, I said to him do u think I like comming here to loose bucket loads of sweat, I told him for Gods sake just rip it out, as he grabbed the root the pain worsened, I said go 4 it and out it came, I was still in pain but not as much. Then I heard my dentist saying, no wonder u were in all that pain, he showed me the root and pointed to the top of it and there was thje culprit, a cyst, it wasnt visible on x-ray. n He put me on pethadine, the poor cleaners were waiting nearly 2 hours past their finish time, but the door of the surgery was open to let air in as I was burning up. The cleaners were watching the whole thing. I remember hearing one say to the other, sod this Margaret I think I will leave booking my check up for a while.
Well, its weird u went thru nearly same as I did, u went yesterday for an extraction like me and on opening my first question, i found ur question aftyer I scrollerd down after answering the question I did.
Dont 4get, pain killers, and antibiotics , but u may still be in pain after finishing antibiotics, thats ok cos they still go on doing there job even after stopping them.
If ur worried keep going to ur dentist or doctor untill ur pain and infection free.
Good luck
Jimmy from Essexd England
Ps Sorry about my spelling mistakes, I have corrected as best I can, but nearly took 40 fits when I saw one word had the letter K accidentally typed in a word bthat became naughty. If u did see it, please accept my apologees, it was purely my poor fingers as I am disabled and have 5 different problems with my hands.
