i have two 740 wagons. one is manual the other automatic.
the manual gets 26-28 mpg and the auto 24-26 mpg. keep in mind the manual has 263K miles and the auto 165K miles.

My 1991 Volvo 740 wagon gets about 28 miles to the gallon.

Fork's got it right. My 740 has over 300,000 miles with a five-speed and gets about 25 miles per gallon. I keep waiting for the motor to die, but it's still very strong.

I routinely got 24-26 mpg with my '90 740. I should tell you that my 740 was equipped with the Bendix Regina management system as opposed to the better Bosch equipment. I'm sorry but I have no figures on the Bosch-equiped vehicles.
