i really don't know anything about the bible. i'd like to learn more about other religions. i'd like to know if there's a type of church or type of religion that really open to outsiders, and are willing to be understanding, and not overwhelming, or pressure me to convert

Unitarian or unitarian universalist churches are usually very open minded and won't try to get you to believe the way they do. Especially if you talk to the pastor ahead of time and tell them that you just wanted to hear a few sermons for educational purposes.

I was raised Jewish and as a kid I was encouraged to go to church with my friends and see how different churches saw things differently. I found it a fascinating experience. Some services were very cool. Some were 'creepy' (the Pentacostals kind of scared me the first time.)

I'd say there was a range from 'liberal' to 'conservative', or from 'loose' to 'hard-liner'. You could start at either end. 8^) The loosest is Unitarian. The most hard-line is a fundamentalist 'Bible- believing' church--many of these are not 'denominational' because they believe they are only 'Christian'. (If you see the name is 'XXXX Christian Church', that's what I mean.)

Almost all churches are open to outsiders and very welcoming. They would love to have you as a member but most won't try to convert you on your first visit.

You might also try a Jewish temple, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc. if you want to get the wide view.

I recommend going with a friend. If nobody welcomes you or talks to you, perhaps keep looking.

I don't know about all religions and how intimidating they are. I think going to any new church is at least slightly intimidating. Many Christian churches I've gone to have information centers and greeters that you can ask questions. Some are friendlier than others though.

I would advise you to seek Jesus about letting him be your saviour and Lord (through prayer) Otherwise you could get a book on different churches and denominations at the Public Library or if you wish to spend the money, at a Christian book store. Personally I would hang out at the bar before I'd go to a lukewarm church. Just being honest. I believe we are meant to be full of life and full of the power of the Holy Spirit.

Blessed for me there are some really ON FIRE and intimidating churches out there. If God were small enough for me to keep him in a box, I wouldn't want to worship him.

Maybe a bigger church would be better for you (like 1,000 people or so) where you won't stand out so easily. You could sort of sit back and listen and decide how much you wanted to be involved. I'd recommend independent charismatic churches personally, but which denomination you go with really depends on your temperament.

I would like to suggest you find a local Assembly of God church. It is non-denominational. Each one I have been to is filled with people who will welcome you, be there for you, and not pressure you. They are completely bible-based, and you would be comfortable sitting in on their bible study classes. God bless you for hearing His call to you.

Unitarian is pretty generalized. Mormons and baptists are friendly but intense.

I would try a Baptist church if I were you.......

We go straight from the Scriptures.....no holds barred.
Nothing scary about the preaching.....just the truth.

Teach yourself. That is the only way to the truth of the matter.
