Even if you buy a 6 month policy, you can cancel it at any time and get a pro rated refund for the unused time! Many times people cancel coverage in the middle of a policy period. The car could be sold, junked or traded in, and the insurance canceled!
This is not a big problem! Ask your insurance agent for details!!

Most policies will allow you to pay by the month as opposed to all six months at once. If you don't have this option call and explain your situation to them and see if it would be possible to pay for only the next two months.
