iv decided to get a HD upscaling dvd player as i have a huge dvd collection and so im not ready to crossover to full HD-DVD yet. i have a good samsung lcd HDTV up to 1080i and i have narrowed down my search to two dvd players

the samsung HD-870
up scaling, matches my tv,digital audio out,

or

slimline pro 700. priced at £41.99 both are on ebay for very good prices about £50 the slimline pro is multi region and has progressive scan and upscales to 1080p. 1080p is useless to me at the moment as my HD tv doesnt support it but i may get one in the future

First, your HDTV will upscale the signal from a DVD player (480i or 480p) to the 1080i resolution of the TV. Alternatively, an upscaling DVD player will do the same thing, in essence bypassing the scaler in the HDTV. The question is which scaler (that in the HDTV or that in the DVDplayer) does the better job?

If you have a good TV the internal scaler may be better than the scaler in an inexpensive upscaling DVD player. On the other hand a good upscaling DVD player (e.g. the OPPO DV-971HD, or 981 and similar) will certainly do a better job than a low to medium quality HDTV. Unfortunately, with mid-level equipment there is no way to predict, and you have to actually try and see.

That said, if you are unsatisfied with your present setup it may be the scaler in the TV is poor ... in which case a good upscaling DVD player may be a good interim step.

Read the reviews at the link, they give an idea of the range of quality out there.

I suspect the models you have suggested are mediocre, and you can do better (e.g. a used OPPO DV971-HD, if you can find one (~ 70 Pounds). Another option would be to consider a low end HD DVD player (like the Toshiba HD-A2 (or UK equivalent). It has been discontinued so may be difficult to find, but it should be available for about 90-110 Pounds, and is both an excellent upscaling DVD player and a 1080i output HD DVD player. It may be worth the extra if within your budget.

You may even be able to find a store that will allow you to try and return the player if it doesn't give satisfactory results.

Hope this helps.

i would opt for the LG dvx 9900h-i used to own one before i got the tosh-and it did the business. upscaled images on my plasma perfectly-no pixelation-no fuss-one can be had for around £50.
