According to the early Christians, sin is a symptom of an illness. To use the symbology of the first five hundred years of Christianity, Jesus was the Medicine of Life. Eucharist inherently forgave sins because it united one with God the Father and in God the Father no sin can exist. Just as it was viewed as a symptom of illness, illnessess are of varying severity. For the most extreme illness, more powerful and specific healing needed done, hence the mysteries of healing and the mysteries of reconcilliation.

So sin is wrong because it is seen as a willing participation in the corruption of the world, it is the willful spreading of disease. It was seen as no different than having AIDS and then having sex with people and spreading it.

After the first five centuries and in the Jewish period preceding it, other ideas of sin became prevelant in various localities, including beliefs that sin caused physical illness, sin resulted in actual misfortune, and even "once saved always saved."

Interestingly, there is little authoritative teaching on this issue over the last 2000 years.

God is not a personified deity but rather the non-material field of reality we are embedded that is responsive to consciousness.

People assume that sin is an error and that they will be punished if they don't repent and believe in Jesus - or whatever. That is nonsense. The real meaning and significance of sin is its psychological significance - it is a sense of personal shame of 'being' unfixable. Most people suffer from some degree of this from childhood imprinting. This is ludicrous of course and Jesus' message was that this is never the case. No error is unforgiveable. But then being forgiven has a deeper psychological significance than most can conceive of - because reality mirrors the contents of consciousness. Shame and guilt result in a miserable life.

Well it's the thing that you literally know you shouldn't do but do anyhow and feel guilty. Next time you don't feel quite so guilty and it continues on until you feel no guilt at all. That original "little thing" may have been stealing a penny, or harboring carnal thoughts of the neighbors spouse, and continues to grow into "grand-theft auto" and/or adultry. It proves to be morally and socially wrong, but very much in defiance of Gods laws. This is how sin goes about doing it's dirty work.

Sin in sin. It is what separates us from God. We have to trust that God (The Almighty Creator of all things) knows what he is about. But God knows the things we have to do in life. That none of us is perfect and if you have to tell a little lie to help promote peace like for example my wife gets her hair done and it looks hideous. I don't say "Man what gorilla did your hair!" No I say wow honey you did that for me? That is wonderful. "Most women want to look their best and if they fail it is a horrible sight." I don't say I don't like it I just suggest that the next time she may try a different style. Being brutally honest can be just as bad. Like "Dave, do I look big in these Jeans?" The obvious answer is the Jeans don't make her look big it is that we are both overweight. Now do I devastate her by saying that? No. I keep the peace by saying "That is very form fitting." It is telling the truth but not being hurtful. I am not teaching you how to bend the truth but we all sin and fall short of the Glory of God. And God will judge you on your actions. If you do a lie to get out of trouble that is not good.

It's not the same. A white lie, provided that this white lie didn't cause the slaughtering of 46 people, is a venial sin. One that doesn't take you from the grace of God. Slaughtering 46 people, and knowingly doing so while knowing it is wrong, is a mortal sin, a sin that separates you from God.

All sin pulls you further from God...whether it be venial or mortal. A lot of times, its being okay with the venial sins all the time that leads a person into committing bigger, more serious mortal sins.

Nonetheless, all sin, big or small, can be forgiven by God in the name of Christ Jesus. In Catholicism, this is done through repentance and reconciliation.

God is always ready to forgive and welcome back those who are looking to come back out of love and true sorrow for their wrongdoings.

God Bless!

I understand that "sin," in its original meaning, meant "missing the mark." Any amount of or level of missing the mark is still "missing the mark, for whatever reason. But "sin" as it is used today by the self-righteous, is a whipping tool to bring fear to people and prevent them from approaching self-examination and self-responsibility. We all have conscience and know good behaviors from bad ones (though there are shades and degrees of behavior based on specific situations). Would I steal to feed my baby? If it were dying? If I were desperate and had NO other option? Circumstances alter cases, and who is to sit in the "seat of judgment"? Is it possible that a "God" would despise a baby enough to punish its loving mother? Questions, questions, questions....they are all moot. I am Sirius

Okay, a little perspective on the process:

God does not care about dualities of good/bad, left/right, up/down...nor the scales of priorities we accept, nor which side we catagorize anything...WE created these, and He's just fine with our use of this power. We are here to create...to be...and while we are being, He is absorbing every experience we create...this is how He experiences Himself as Everything...and this was the purpose of "Creation".

Sooo, in reality, there really is no "sin"...it is simply a choice you made in one of your moments here--keeping in mind that every creation has a consequence. Not happy with that choice & it's consequences???...make a wiser choice in your next moment...be something that does make you happy with Self...this is your adventure...defining Self & reflecting that Self to others.

People, of which you are one right now, come & go in each others' lives to provide opportunities to make choices--to have experiences...to define & refine themselves. A white lie may seem trivial to one, yet devasting to another, esp. when the one you told it to finds out...you have defined yourself as a liar, but at the same time you have provided the other person, as well as anyone else who finds out, the opportunity to reflect themselves as forgiving, or hateful, or untrusting, or compassionate, etc. You then have your next moment to decide if you choose to be apologetic, regretful, or to lie again & make an excuse...See???

The slayer has the same impact...they define themselves as a killer & provide those close to the victims, as well as those that read about it, the opportunity to reflect themselves in that situation...all having their very next moments to be otherwise if they so choose...See???

Same difference!!! LOL Anyway, hope that now you kind of understand the gist of things...Good Journey, Sweetness!!!

Good question. I trust that my answer will help your understanding.

First, you need to understand that God's Laws are based on His nature and character.

For instance, since God is Truth, telling a lie violates the very nature of God you are stamped with in your soul.

God is Life, so murder is a sin.

Do you get the idea?

Furthermore, when we continue in sin, we are rebelling against God's rightful authority in our lives and committing high treason by setting up our OWN authority in God's place.

High treason is punishable by death in ANY society.

But remember, it's not just one little lie. Ok, so you admit you have lied, but that makes you a liar.

What about stealing? Have you ever taken anything that wasn't rightfully yours to take? If you are human like the rest of us, you would most likely have to say "yes", which also makes you a thief.

Next, I would have to ask if you've ever looked upon another person with sexual desire? Jesus said that in your heart, this makes you guilty of adultery.

Finally (for the time being), have you ever been so angry at someone that you wished them ill will, or even hated them? Jesus said that since God looks at the heart, He sees murderous intent, and that makes you guilty of murder.

So, right now, if you had to say "yes" to these 4 questions, that makes you a lying, thieving, adulterous murderer!

But that's not even the end of it all!

If you have ever lied, which your question implies you have, then I have another question for you: Do you like it when others lie to you?

If you said "no", then that adds hypocracy to the list, because you have demonstrated a double-standard of rules of morality!

Again, if you have ever taken anything that wasn't rightfully yours to take, I must ask if you like it if someone stole YOUR stuff?

Again, if you said "no", then this is a double standard, which, again, makes you a hypocrite.

So, now you are a lying, thieving, adulterous, murderous hypocrite.

Should I continue with the other six commandments? I've only touched on 4 of them.

We are ALL guilty before God because we have ALL rebelled against His authority, committed high treason, and sinned against Him.

This is pretty harsh, I realize, but until we see just how sinful sin truly is, we can never truly understand why God must judge us.

(The rest of the story is found in Jesus Christ, but this answer is getting to be a bit long.)

In the eyes of man....
For the love of chocolate cake
Even at the thought of it, I salivate
And then the smell of it baking fresh
How long must I wait to satisfy my flesh

The frosting is so creamy
Upon my lips it is so dreamy
So moist and so sweet
Nature intended for me to have this treat

For the vegetable has no flavor
So please don't judge my eating behavior
I was made this way
It is in my DNA

Why should I deny my pleasure
When chocolate cake is my treasure
I will eat it all day and all night
It tastes so good it must be right, right?

Sin in archery terms refers to missing the Mark or bulls eye

so man has attached this meaning to Falling short of God's Glory or Purpose

when your actions expand God's kingdom thru the act of love then you hit the mark

But when your actions fall short of what you are really here to do then you have missed the mark

Since God is all Knowing and understands that you are learning than he is patient and is loving

If a small child is just learning how to walk the parents of that child will not hate that child or yell at that child for falling they pick the child up and continue to encourage that child

This is what God does for our entire Life he does not Hate us or banishes us he encourages us to get back up and learn to walk again
