3. Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.

"Solipsism" as a sin is a reaction to Thelema.

The Book of the Law, the "Holy" book of Thelema states "Every Man and Woman is a Star." A strict teaching of Thelema is that if everybody adhered to their "True Wills" no one would contradict each other. Harmony, all of that jazz.

The star bit has to do with the fact that back in Crowley's time, people thought stars didn't collide. So if "every man and woman is a star" and they were following their "True Orbit" (Will) then they wouldn't collide or interfere with each other's Will.

In Satanism, this whole idea is silly. Another spiritual pipe dream. So LaVey decided to make it an official "Sin." You can't expect that people aren't going to contradict what you want. Its foolish and impractical.

Because satanism strives to make sure people understand that, for better or worse terms, "you're not the only one here and nobody wants to put up with your problems either". Solipsism basically says that everyone thinks like you do, everyone shares the same prejudices and view points, when in reality they don't

According to Merriam-Webster, solipsism is:
"a theory holding that the self can know nothing but its own modifications and that the self is the only existent thing; also : extreme egocentrism"

If you ONLY believe in the existence of your self, then you DON'T even beleive in the existence of Satan. Thus, such a belief would completely contradict belief in anything else.

Peace.

I think it's because it's considered dangerous or arrogant to assume that nothing outside your own mind exists. For example, if other people are only a product of your own mind, you would naturally project the same ideals, moral beliefs etc. on to them. This would be a problem if you believed it was right and moral to rape people, because I believe the 'Golden Rule' is a part of Satanism- treat others how you would like to be treated. If you thought it was moral to rape people, and didn't mind being raped yourself....you see where I'm going.

If I'm completely wrong and ignorant, I apologise.

They don't want their precious little illusion to be found out.

This is more easily understandable if one considers the actual scale of the components of an atom. If one takes into account the fact that the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom actually have huge spaces between them it becomes clear that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are made up of 99+ percent empty space.

This alone does not seem too important till you add the idea that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are more of a loose conglomeration that share a similar attraction but never really touch each other.

At first glance this does not really seem relevant, but closer analysis reveals that this adds a tremendous amount of empty space to solid objects that are already made up of atoms that are 99 percent space. When so-called solid objects are seen in this light it becomes apparent that they can in no way be the seemingly solid objects they appear to be.

We ourselves are not exceptions to this phenomenon.

These seemingly solid objects are more like ghostly images that we interpret as solid objects based on our perceptual conclusions.

From this we must conclude that Perception is some sort of a trick that helps us to take these ghostly images and turn them into a world we can associate and interact with. This clever device seems to be a creation of our intellect that enables us to interact with each other in what appears to be a three dimensional reality.

I hope that helps to answered your question.

Love and blessings Don

Ladies and gentlemen, we have officially seen the most esoteric question ever posted on Y!A.

(BTW - to Don above... that is the "pop culture" description of atoms. The "huge" space between protons, neutrons and electrons is relative. For all practical purposes, solid objects ARE solid. Quantum explanations are only valid if you plan on existing at the quantum level. The vast majority of us are stuck living in Newton and Einstein's world.)

I don't know about satanism, sorry. But the idea that I can't believe anything outside my own mind is crazy, since our minds are so prone to hallucination or being tricked by illusions. I don't think you can trust yourself any more than you trust the things you perceive.

Nobody has the right to feel and act like they know everything already, or decide that they KNOW what has happened without even exploring. Talk about doofus...

I would guess that if the only thing you could be certain about is the existence of your own mind, that seems to invalidate any religion.
