I am willing to bet that any thinking Christian has at least one disagreement with something their church (denomination) teaches. Doctrines are only the human interpretation of Christ's teachings, and are neither holy nor irrefutable. Although each more than likely thinks that they are closest to Christ's intentions, I would also bet that any thinking Christian KNOWS that their particular denomination has something wrong and they just don't (won't) know what it is until Christ makes all things clear. Thusly, to answer your question directly, I follow my church's interpretations of Christ's teachings insofar as I happen to think is appropriate according to my own personal walk with Him. Am I perfect? No. Does this make me my own god? Absolutely not. Martin Luther (oh darn, I just gave it away) taught that we were given reason as well as faith. Hmmmm . . . interesting, no?
Hee, hee -- I could carry on this conversation into the wee hours of next Thursday -- but this'll do for now.

Have a great night!

There is no way to truly separate the two.

Millions of well informed Christians have argued over the words of Christ for 2000 years.

Your version of the 'words of Christ' are different from your Christian neighbors, and for some reason, Jesus, doesn't feel the need to clear things up.

Christians and all other religions follow the teachings of their leaders, which are supposed to be teachings of a man named Christ. Mind you, the teachings were of course, made orally, then was put to writings, those writings have been translated over and over and over again and again, and each time the translator puts in his/her own bit.

As a Traditional Anglican, my practice is to follow the precepts of Holy Scripture, Holy Tradition and Holy Reason with equal weight given to each. This is a classic, balanced formula from ancient times.

Do you believe your loathing of people who follow Christ is truly intellectual, or the result of your tiny self esteem attempting to support your huge ego?

That's actually why I quit going to church.

Ideas like contraception or drinking or playing cards or dancing are wrong were created through misinterpretations of scripture.

If I'm going to have any misconceptions, I'd like to arrive at them on my own, thank you.

Unfortunately, there IS a difference. Some churches act as if people are there to worship them, and not God.
